Review: The Club At SJC

Review: The Club At SJC

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

I had plenty of time at San Jose Airport, given that I arrived at the airport at around 3PM off my connecting flight, and my flight to London was only shortly after 8PM.

I'm not sure I've ever been to San Jose Airport, though I was impressed by the terminal. It's airy and modern. The one downside is that all the gates are along a single corridor, so walking from one end of the terminal to the other (as I was doing) was quite a haul, and there were no moving sidewalks. Most people aren't making such connections in San Jose, since most people are connecting onto and off of the same airline, with gates near one another.

San Jose Airport has just one lounge -- The Club at SJC -- and I knew that was located near gate 15, so that's where I headed. As I arrived at the lounge, the Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt was just in the final stages of boarding. Nick has reviewed The Club at SJC before, so I'll keep my review fairly short.

Review: British Airways First Class 787 San Jose To London

Review: British Airways First Class 787 San Jose To London

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

I boarded through door L2, where I was welcomed by name and escorted to my seat in the first class cabin (coincidentally, that was the only time during the flight that I was addressed by name). I could tell immediately by the age of the flight attendants that this was one of British Airways' mixed fleet crews.

For those of you not familiar with the distinction here, British Airways' "mixed fleet" flight attendants are those that were hired on ridiculously cheap contracts, frequently referred to as "poverty wages." So while they're typically incredibly well intentioned and even bubbly, they're not going to be as polished as the crews who have been doing the same job for 30 years. I'd say the average age of cabin crew on this flight was maybe early 20s. There was maybe one flight attendant on the plane older than me.

After turning left from the second door I first walked through two rows of business class, which was in a 2-3-2 configuration.

Ukraine International 777 Business Class In 10 Pictures

Ukraine International 777 Business Class In 10 Pictures

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

Hello from Kiev! I just flew Ukraine International Airlines on their brand new (used) 777-200 on the 8hr15min flight from New York, and wanted to share my initial thoughts on the experience.

As some of you may remember, I flew UIA’s 767 business class a couple of years ago from Kiev to New York, and it was awful — the seats were bad, there were no power ports, there were no personal televisions, etc.

UIA has just taken delivery of their first Boeing 777 (the plane used to fly for Asiana, but was reconfigured), so I wanted to see how the experience on the new plane compared. Keep in mind that UIA consistently has great business class fares (I booked a sub-$1,000 one-way business class fare from New York to Brussels via Kiev). On the 767 I thought it wasn’t worth it even at that price, so does my verdict change with the new cabin? Yes, very much so.

How The ‘Big 3’ Airlines Are Forming In Europe

How The ‘Big 3’ Airlines Are Forming In Europe

by James @ One Mile at a Time

You will often see reference to the 'US3' or the 'ME3' when reading about global aviation. The US3 refers to the biggest three airlines in the US -- American, Delta and United which as a result of mergers and consolidation now have by far the most market share in their markets and are three of the biggest airlines in the world. The 'ME3' refers to the biggest and most well-known airlines in the Middle East -- Emirates, Etihad and Qatar.

Those two groups are even in a battle with each other.

Over the last several years, ownership structures in Europe have meant that Europe has slowly but surely developed its own 'Big 3,' with what has become informally known as the 'EU3.' It's interesting that just like in the US, each of the main members of the 'Big 3' in Europe is a member of each of the big 3 global alliances -- Oneworld, Star Alliance and SkyTeam.

Changes Reportedly Coming To The Chase Sapphire Reserve

Changes Reportedly Coming To The Chase Sapphire Reserve

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card is one of the hottest credit cards out there, and for good reason. The card offers a $300 annual travel credit, triple points on dining and travel, a Priority Pass membership, great travel coverage, and a variety of lucrative ways to redeem your points. For those who spend a decent amount on credit cards (especially on dining and travel), I tend to think getting this card is a no brainer

The card is so lucrative that Chase isn't sure they'll ever make money on the card. They've found the retention rate and member engagement with the card to be incredible, though they're also finding that people are using the 3x points categories a lot, and aren't financing many charges, so the margins for Chase are minimal. We know that the unit that oversees the Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card has been pushing for cost cuts, and it looks like we now know some changes they'll make to help them achieve that goal.

Great Deal: Buy Fairmont Gift Cards With 20% Bonus

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

The major hotel chains sometimes sell discounted gift cards, which is a great way to lower the cost of hotel stays. For the past few years Fairmont has been offering bonuses on gift card purchases at least twice a year. Their last such bonus that I can remember was on Black Friday (last November). Fairmont is now back with their latest offer, which will be going live in a few days.

Per Fairmont’s Facebook page, you’ll be able to buy a Fairmont e-gift card with a 20% bonus on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, from 2PM until 5PM EDT.

Historically each person can only take advantage of the promotion once, though you can purchase up to $5,000 worth of gift cards under the offer, which would lead to a $1,000 bonus.

American AAdvantage Has A New Companion Upgrade Policy

American AAdvantage Has A New Companion Upgrade Policy

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

Over the weekend American made some updates to how their companion upgrades work, which is either good or bad news, depending on your travel patterns and status.

This relates to something I first wrote about in late 2016, that was supposed to be implemented as of January 1, 2017. That didn't happen due to American's systems not being ready for this, though it's now finally happening, only 16 months later. ;)

Previously American's companion upgrade policy was that if you were on the same reservation and requested an upgrade, both people would clear based on the higher member's status if the upgrade cleared in advance. However, if the upgrade cleared at the airport (within a few hours of departure) then each person cleared based on their own status, meaning that typically an elite member and their companion would have very different places on the airport upgrade list.

In early April, IHG made some major changes to the anniversary free night certificate offered on their co-branded credit card. Previously the anniversary free night certificate had no cap, meaning you could redeem at any IHG hotel with award availability. IHG hotels retail for up to 70,000 points per night nowadays, so that's quite a value.

However, with this change, IHG only lets you redeem at properties that retail for up to 40,000 points per night. That's potentially still an excellent deal, given that this covers a vast majority of properties. Obviously this benefit was a major reason that a lot of people got the card.

To ease the pain of that adjustment, they said they'd honor the uncapped anniversary free night certificate for the first year for those who got the card between January 1 and April 5, 2018.

6 Essential Ljubljana Food Experiences

by Daryl & Mindi Hirsch @ 2foodtrippers

Check out the six Ljubljana food experiences that you shouldn’t miss when you visit the charming Slovenian capital city.  Our first impression of Slovenia was through a window during an overnight late June bus ride from Bologna, Italy to Zagreb, Croatia. We exited the furnace-like Italian summer heat and found ourselves rolling through cool breezy alpine woods gazing at quaint chalet homes along green, pastoral hills. It wasn’t until we visited two months later that we realized the addictive charms that Slovenia’s polished gem of a capital city, Ljubljana, has to offer. Though most travelers spend ...

Fly All You Want Around Norway This Summer For $435

Fly All You Want Around Norway This Summer For $435

by Travis @ One Mile at a Time

Norway might just be my favorite country to visit in the world, and that's no small statement considering I've been to over 50 countries now. The entire country is basically one big national park. The food is fantastic.

My family has been to Oslo a couple of times, Bergen, and last fall we spent a long weekend in Stavanger where we hiked Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen). It was spectacular, easily one of the best day hikes I've ever done.

OK, so Norway is a little on the expensive side. But if you learn some tricks, it's manageable. I recommend stocking up on Choice Hotel points, for example, so that you can essentially get your room and board for about $120 per night.

UGH: My IHG Account Was Hacked

by Andrew @ One Mile at a Time

Miles and points are great and all, but only if someone doesn't steal them from you. I have a bunch of IHG Rewards points, mainly from my signup bonus for the IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card and from a really lucrative Accelerate offer last year.

The other day I tried to log into my account. I haven't booked any stays with IHG for about 8 months, and I was hoping to redeem some points for an upcoming trip.

IHG's website isn't the best in terms of security -- rather than a strong password, users sign in with their account number or email address and a 4-digit PIN.

North Korea Wants To Launch International Flights And Open Up Airspace

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

It's fascinating to see what's going on with North Korea at the moment. In my opinion it's too early to tell whether anything will actually change, or if the current situation is just grandstanding on Kim Jong-un's part.

With Kim showing a new side (at least for now), it looks like it may have a positive impact on aviation.

The Straits Times reports on some interesting developments with North Korean aviation. Specifically, North Korea has submitted a request with the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) to open new international air routes. As of now Air Koryo (North Korea's national airline, a proud Skytrax 1-star airline) only operates routes to a few Chinese cities. For that matter, those are the only scheduled flights operated to/from Pyongyang Airport. Air China flew there until late last year, though they abruptly canceled flights with just days notice, leaving Air Koryo as the airport's only airline.

Welcome To The OMAAT Team, Steph!

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

Over the past several weeks we've introduced two new contributors -- James and Spencer -- and today I'm excited to introduce a third new contributor.

Please welcome Steph to the blog, who wrote one of our most popular guest blog posts ever, about her adventures booking a SkyMiles award ticket on China Eastern. Not only was the story a great lesson, but her writing style is incredible and can't help but make me want to read more. She could probably write about basketweaving and I'd find it interesting.

Steph has a different angle than the rest of us, which is another reason we're excited to have her join us. She's a true "road warrior" who travels for work, often on some routes that may not be so glamorous, and I think that's a relatable and useful perspective to have. On top of that, she's big into the outdoors, so I look forward to reading about her adventures there.

Two Hotel Credit Cards To Consider Instead Of Marriott’s New Card

Two Hotel Credit Cards To Consider Instead Of Marriott’s New Card

A few days ago we saw the introduction of the new Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card, The card has a welcome bonus of 100,000 Marriott Rewards bonus points after spending $5,000 within three months, which is a generous bonus. I value Marriott Rewards points at ~0.8 cents each, so to me those points are worth $800.

The card has a $95 annual fee, and offers lots of perks that more than justify that, in my opinion, including a free night award on your account anniversary every year (which can be used at a property costing up to 35,000 points per night) as well as 15 elite qualifying nights towards status every year.

However, this card isn't for everyone:

Vietnam Airlines 787 Business Class In 10 Pictures

Vietnam Airlines 787 Business Class In 10 Pictures

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

Hello from Ho Chi Minh City! I'm presently in the middle of my quick round the world trip, and completed the 11hr45min flight from London to Ho Chi Minh City on the Vietnam Airlines 787-9. Vietnam Airlines' longhaul aircraft have been on my radar for a while. While they don't fly to the US (though they hope to soon), they often have good fares between Europe and Asia/Australia, and I'm also intrigued by the fact that they have both 787s and A350s.

I find that most of my flights have some element of surprise, while the Vietnam Airlines flight was almost exactly what I was expecting it to to be.

Vietnam's 787-9s have a total of 28 reverse herringbone seats in business class seats, in a 1-2-1 configuration.

Introduction: Birthday In The Seychelles

Introduction: Birthday In The Seychelles

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

Welcome to my next trip report, covering travel in British Airways first class, Etihad/Air Seychelles business class, Turkish business class, and stays at the two Four Seasons properties in the Seychelles.

While I plan a lot of my travel last minute, Ford and I try to plan at least a couple of trips per year in advance. My last minute travel planning can often be stressful and uncertain, since there are so many variables. Sometimes it's nice to plan a trip months in advance, so you can really look forward to it. In this case the trip happened to coincide with my birthday.

I have a list in my head of dozens of places I'd like to visit, and for the past couple of years the Seychelles has been near the top of that list. After looking at award availability and considering the season, the Seychelles turned out to be a great option for our trip.

Chase Sapphire Reserve $300 Travel Credit: Everything You Need To Know

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card has quickly become one of the most popular premium travel rewards credit cards. Not only does the card have an excellent welcome bonus, but it offers compelling perks and points that make it worth holding onto long term.

There are many things to love about the card, like the 50,000 point welcome bonus, triple points on dining and travel, a Priority Pass membership with unlimited guesting privileges, Visa Infinite perks, car rental and travel coverage, and much more. However, in this post I wanted to focus on the Chase Sapphire Reserve's $300 annual travel credit.

This is the single greatest perk of the card, as it essentially earns you back two-thirds of your $450 annual fee every year, and the way I view it, this means that the card only really costs you $150 per year to hold onto.

Miami Airport Gets Two New Priority Pass Restaurants

Miami Airport Gets Two New Priority Pass Restaurants

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

Over the past couple of years we've seen several airport restaurants and bars in the US join Priority Pass. The concept is that at some airports Priority Pass has a tough time striking a deal with a major lounge due to crowding issues, so when that’s not possible, they instead work with a restaurant.

My assumption is that Priority Pass pays a fixed amount for each guest who enters a lounge, so instead Priority Pass is just paying these restaurants a fixed amount, and then you can spend some dollar amount at that restaurant (typically $28-30). So far in the US, non-traditional Priority Pass locations include:

Etihad Rumored To Be Canceling Plane Orders As Part Of Restructuring

Etihad Rumored To Be Canceling Plane Orders As Part Of Restructuring

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

Among the "big three" Gulf carriers, Etihad seems to be struggling the most. That's a combination of their failed investments in other airlines, their lack of strategy in building a profitable route network, and seemingly also largely the government somewhat cutting them off and telling them to stop losing money.

Meanwhile Emirates continues to do well (even though they're parking some planes due to a pilot shortage), and Qatar continues to have the full backing of their government, despite losing a significant amount of money.

Etihad has been trying to cut costs, which has included changing their investments in other airlines (they cut off airberlin and Alitalia, Air Seychelles is restructuring, and Air Serbia is rumored to be next), and also has included cutting costs that impact the Etihad passenger experience.

Fascinating Video: Russian Pilots Of The Congo

Fascinating Video: Russian Pilots Of The Congo

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

While browsing YouTube early this morning (because I couldn't sleep due to jetlag) I stumbled upon a fascinating video from VICE. As I'm sure you can imagine, I had to click when I saw the headline "Russian Pilots of the Congo." The video is several years old, so I'm surprised I hadn't seen it before.

Growing up I always wanted to be an airline pilot, and had dreamed of working for a foreign airline. To this day, I'm fascinated by the nationality of pilots on various airlines. There's something cool about boarding a flight on Hainan Airlines or Fiji Airways and hearing a familiar American accent, for example.

In general the aviation industry is hot right now, and there are lots of opportunities for ex-pat pilots to work abroad. However, I don't think I've seen a story on ex-pat pilots who are quite like these guys. Specifically, this story is about some Russian pilots flying ancient cargo planes around the Congo. They all fly every day, they all live together, and they seem to have very unusual lives.

When Is Hyatt Points + Cash Not A Good Deal?

When Is Hyatt Points + Cash Not A Good Deal?

by lucky @ One Mile at a Time

In early 2014, Hyatt introduced Points + Cash, allowing members to redeem part points and part cash for a stay. This is a feature that several hotel loyalty programs offer, though the underlying system differs by program.

In the case of Hyatt there are no blackout dates for free night redemptions, meaning that you can outright redeem points for a hotel stay as long as a standard room is available for sale. That's not the case for Points + Cash, however. These redemptions are capacity controlled, and it's at the hotel's discretion whether or not they make that option available.

When Points + Cash was first introduced it was really exciting because you could earn elite qualifying nights for these stays, and could also apply confirmed suite upgrades to these reservations. When that was the case I almost exclusively redeemed my Hyatt points for Points + Cash bookings, to make sure that I was earning elite nights for all those stays.
