On Cancer: Why is it always the good ones?

by Hayley Griffiths @ A Life of More

It’s been in my thoughts a lot recently. The C word. No, not that one, the other one. I’m talking about the Big C, that inevitably we all have to face up to at some time in our lives, whether vicariously through friends or family, or in person. Yep, it’s cancer. Cancer. That big, fat elephant in the room. The ...

Let’s Get the Hell Out of Here! | Anywhere

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

Do you ever have the feeling that you’ve been clicking away on your keyboard for too long and if you sit through another meeting/send another email/answer another phone call you might actually implode? That’s your sign. You, my dear, need a break. I’ve been there too. It can be tempting to quit it all when you hit this point (and I’m probably not the person to advise against this…) but sometimes the solution is far simpler than that. Maybe all you really need is a trip on the calendar to offer an end in sight. But with a whole world to choose from and just a little bit of time, you’ll inevitably start to wonder “where should I go, anyway?”. You could head to Southeast Asia for spicy bowls of noodles on streetside plastic stools. Maybe you could dip down to South America to hike through palm forests and spend your nights asleep in a tent. You could pick a spot in Europe for glasses of wine in pretty little cafés that overlook buildings far older than we’ve got back at home. Or, you could even fly across the country and road trip your way back by campervan. The options are seriously endless. […]

A Second Story (ft. Munich) | Germany

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post is in partnership with #SimplyMunich. I received a complimentary Munich sightseeing bus tour with Gray Line, but all opinions are my own! My approach to Munich was a bit like the Going on a Bear Hunt poem. If you can’t go over it, can’t go under it, can’t go around it, you’ve got to go through it. You see, I didn’t immediately feel a connection with Munich. It was beautiful, for sure, but it felt at first like the kind of place where you’re free to look, but not touch. There were palaces (oh the palaces!) and gothic churches. The city was littered with royal residences and the sidewalks weren’t caked with chewed gum like I’d come to expect in Berlin. There were refined restaurants and cocktail bars and designer stores that I wouldn’t dare enter in Levis. I needed another way to connect with the city that didn’t involve so much snubbing, and so I went up. Up to the second story of a sightseeing bus. While bus tours aren’t normally my scene, I’ve taken a liking to this method of exploring a city over the past few years. Rather than getting lost in a tangle of U-bahn […]

Boracay Basics: Everything You Need To Know For Your First Trip

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Powder soft white sand beaches that appear to stretch on into infinity. Crystal clear water perfect for diving (or just watching fish swim around your toes as you wade into the ocean). A buzzing nightlife with beach entertainment and nightclubs that keep the party going well into the wee hours of the morning. These things and more have had tourists flocking to Boracay since the early 1980’s. One of the Philippines’ most popular islands (there are over 7,000!), these days Boracay receives almost two million visitors a year. It’s understandable – I mean, everyone deserves to relax on an island paradise at least once in their lives, right? – but such a high level of tourism on such a small island has had some pretty major consequences for this popular destination, which we would quickly discover upon our own arrival around this time last year. We visited Boracay in mid-March, hoping to spend the better part of a week doing absolutely nothing while surrounded by Boracay’s natural beauty. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, that’s not exactly what we got. (Keep reading for the details of what went wrong…and how you can avoid a similar situation!) To say we were disappointed […]

A Quick Guide To Boracay’s White Beach

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

With its pure white sand and waters so clear you can see straight to the bottom, it’s no wonder Boracay’s White Beach is often ranked as one of the top beaches in the world. But it doesn’t stop there – not only is White Beach beautiful, it’s also loads of fun. (I’m pretty sure this exact beach is what the Philippines tourism board had in mind when they created their catchy slogan, It’s more fun in the Philippines!) Stretching over four kilometers down the west coast of the island, in addition to being Boracay’s most popular beach, White Beach is also the island’s largest. It’s where you’ll find the vast majority of hotels and resorts, restaurants, and shopping districts on the island, as well as activities to keep you busy in between naps on the beach. To make it easier to navigate, White Beach has been broken down into three general sections known as “stations”. Each station has its own personality distinct from the others. Given how long it can take to walk from one end of the beach to the other, where you decide to stay on White Beach will probably influence which area you spend the most time […]

3 Great Beaches In Boracay Besides White Beach

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

If the prospect of spending your entire Boracay vacation surrounded by other tourists and countless salespeople isn’t exactly the paradise you had in mind, you are in luck. White Beach is not the only place in Boracay to relax sea-side and soak up the sun. Despite its small size (and the fact that White Beach takes up a huge chunk of beach space), there are indeed several other beaches in Boracay worth visiting as well. At least a dozen of them, in fact. Now, don’t get me wrong. If you’re coming to Boracay, it’s almost obligatory that you spend some time on the island’s most popular beach – it is what made the island famous, after all. But if you’re visiting in peak season and you prefer a little more personal space, then you can rest assured there are plenty of other great beaches in Boracay to escape to when White Beach gets too busy. We checked out a few of Boracay’s lesser-known beaches on our trip and fell in love with three in particular, all for different reasons. So if you’re looking for quieter beaches in Boracay (still with gorgeous scenery, of course) or beaches with better waves, then […]

Seaplane Service in Asia

Seaplanes are becoming more and more popular throughout Asia. In countries often surrounded by water on at least one side, amphibious aircrafts are a no-brainer for everything ranging from emergency situations to tourism. Halong – Lan Ha Bay Day Trip

Halong Bay is arguably one of the most compelling destinations in the world. However, there are fewer visitors to Lan Ha Bay which is located at the southern edge of Ha Long Bay. Words fail to fully describe the beauty of its majesty and mystery. You will see spectacular rock formations rise out of mirrored jade-green water.

9 Reasons You’ll Never Want to Leave Cascais | Portugal

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post on my favorite things to do in Cascais is in partnership with Visit Cascais. They sponsored my stay in exchange for an honest review, but all opinions are my own! It’s not so hard to imagine Cascais as a seaside painting. You know the kind: a scene of fisherman skiffs bobbing about on a harbor with a whitewashed lighthouse and rustic houses in the background? And when you walk around Cascais, it feels that idyllic, too. The town once favored as a retreat for Portuguese royals has maintained a certain old world charm that is particularly hard to come by these days. Many of the best things to do in Cascais don’t involve doing much at all, and it’s the slow pace of life that makes this place great. Want to explore one of the cutest cities on the coast of Portugal? Here are nine reasons you’ll probably never want to leave Cascais. 1. The sea is pretty great Just calling it a beach town would sell Cascais short, but its seaside location is definitely the best part. The rocky coastline is lovely and scattered with viewpoints where you can stop and stare. There are four major beaches […]

Harry Potter Studio Tour In London: 10 Things To Do & See

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

It was the beginning of 2014. I was dealing with a pretty severe case of insomnia and quickly running out of ways to keep myself sane during regular human sleeping hours when my daughter suggested tackling the Harry Potter series. I resisted at first – I mean, Harry Potter was for kids, right? And besides that, seven almost textbook-size books seemed like far too big a commitment for someone as sleep-deprived as myself. Even still, I was willing to try anything that would help me get to sleep or stay entertained if I couldn’t, and so one night I opened up the first book and began my journey with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I learned two things quite quickly: you’re never too old for Harry Potter, and these books are so worth the commitment. Eleven weeks later I finished the last chapter of the last book and, holding back tears, had to force myself not to pick up the first book and start all over again. The following Christmas we watched all eight of the Harry Potter movies all the way through for the first time in something like three days. After hearing about our movie marathon, a friend mentioned […]

5 Things You Must Do At St Peter’s Basilica In Rome

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Nestled within the city of Rome is a unique piece of land that lays claim to several important titles, not the least of which (ha!) is smallest country in the world. At 100 acres in size, Vatican City is less than a third of the size of London’s Hyde Park and has a lower total population than that of a Central Line train on a Monday morning, but what it may lack in size, it certainly makes up for in content. Not only is Vatican City the home of the pope, it’s also where you’ll find some of history’s most revered works of art as well as the largest church in the world – St Peter’s Basilica. Besides its massive size, St Peter’s Basilica is famous for being the final resting place of St Peter (one of Jesus’ 12 apostles) and a significant number of past popes. At the time it was built in the 1600’s, it was also considered to be the greatest work of Renaissance architecture ever made. I’m no architecture expert, but I think it’s still quite a knock-out these days, too! If you’re visiting Rome, you’ll likely end up stepping over into Vatican City at some […]

Snapshots Of Boracay: A Photo Series

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

By now I’m sure you’ve caught on to the fact that these ‘Snapshots of…’ posts are simply a way for me to share the abundance of photos I inevitably end up taking while traveling that don’t quite fit into any of my other articles. I usually only create these for our city trips since, for whatever reason, those are the ones where I take the most photos, but all of the downtime we had in Boracay meant I came home with a heck of a lot more photos than I usually do on a non-city trip. (Because for me, apparently, downtime just means more time to take photos.) And so, Snapshots of Boracay is happening. I take close to 100 photos per day when we travel. Which is insane, obviously. No one needs to take that many photos. But I’m one of those people who can’t just experience. I have to experience + document. It’s how I’m wired. I recently read an article that claimed our excessive photographing of events and daily life is impairing our ability to actually remember these things properly. Well, that’s pretty scary, right? I don’t know about you, but part of the reason I take […]

A Weekend In Oxford: 10 Things To Do + Travel Tips

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

It’s funny, but it seems like it’s the places nearest to us that always remain unseen the longest. Maybe it’s because places within close proximity to home don’t require much advance planning to visit, making it easier to keep putting them off for a future unscheduled weekend. As if those actually exist. At least that was the case for us with Oxford, anyway. I don’t know how many times we mentioned spending a weekend in Oxford before we finally did it. Too many. To tell you the truth, if we were still living in London, Oxford would probably still be holding a spot on our to-see list because the thing that ultimately convinced us to just choose a date and go was finding out we would soon be moving 7,000 miles away! And so, with only a few weeks left in London, we finally spent that long-talked-about weekend in Oxford and came home kicking ourselves for waiting so long. An hour’s journey west of London by train, Oxford has much of the same charm as the nearby Cotswolds, but far more energy than its sleepier neighbors thanks to the famous university that lies within it. Home to the University of […]

Stay Strange: The Eclectic Bungalows in Estoril | Portugal

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post is in partnership with Lucky’s Guest House & Visit Cascais. I received a complimentary stay at their hotel in Estoril exchange for my honest review, but all opinions are my own! There are two types of talented interior decorators: those who assemble rooms by way of online orders and showroom visits, and those who forage and find and create something inspired. Lucky’s Guest House is definitely the latter. The decor is neither a perfect matching of elements nor adhering to any particular design style. Rather, it is design-by-feeling. Pieces collected from throughout the ages sit alongside faux furs, Buddhist statues, and champagne bottles in chrome buckets. You’ll find the lounge to be a shrine to in-house Muay Thai champion (we’ll get into that later) and the outdoor chill out area an eclectic mix of woven pillows, paper lanterns, and shipping palette furniture. Lucky’s Guest House is somehow overstated and super comfy at the exact same time, and that’s what makes it the coolest little hotel in Estoril. Want to stay strange? Here’s a look inside the very quirky Lucky’s Guest House. About Lucky’s Guest House Maria Villar & Nuno Neves created Lucky’s Guest House with loftier ambitions than most […]

About 2017: Life According to Instagram

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

2017 started in South America. Dodging fireworks beneath the giant church in Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, to be more specific. If you asked me what the year ahead was going to look like, I don’t think I could have told you. I didn’t know where I’d be in three days, much less, where I’d be at the same time next year. But isn’t it funny how, ready or not, next year always seems to come. I don’t share too much about my personal life on Travel Outlandish because I don’t consider myself to be “that kind of blogger”. But, what the hell. In case you were curious, 2017 was a big one. It was a year of some significant losses. It was also the year that I trekked in Patagonia on my own, the year that I finally learned Spanish, the year that some major relationships evolved, the year that this blog took off, and the year that I moved to Berlin. I’d be lying if I said it was all painless, but it wasn’t all bad either. It was a year full of monumental, messy, hard-to-handle lessons that will [hopefully] make 2018 that much better. So, from Peru to Germany, […]

This post on Portuguese food & restaurants in Cascais is in partnership with Visit Cascais. Some meals were covered in exchange for an honest review, but all opinions are my own. When it comes to ordering food in Portugal “the best thing on the menu” seems to mean “everything on the menu”. “No more” turns into “something small” that is actually something completely normal sized when it finally makes it to your table. Italian grandmothers have got nothing on Portuguese waiters when it comes to filling your plate, and that’s a fact. But I guess if I’m going to eat too much of anything, let it be the briny oysters and freshly caught sea bass at some quirky little restaurant in Cascais. I’ve spent a lot of time wondering why Portuguese food has never achieved the notoriety of its Mediterranean neighbors. Tapas bars and Italian restaurants are everywhere, but finding a Portuguese restaurant that serves Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá anywhere outside of Portugal takes serious work. My trip to Portugal was started on a press trip to Cascais, meaning I approached dining a bit differently than I normally would. Rather than street side stalls, I holed up at traditional restaurants in […]

Going Wild: 15 Treks in South America

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

Let’s think of South America as the world’s playground. Everyone has heard of the Inca Trail, but when it comes to treks in South America, that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface. You can get the most from your time on the continent by exploring its limits. You can cross borders on your own two feet or be at the top of a volcano before the sun has even peeked over the horizon. And that, guys, is what adventure travel is all about. There are thousands of trails to choose from in South America. Knowing just which trek to pick can be your first big challenge. I collaborated with some extra rad adventure travelers to detail the best treks in South America so you don’t miss a single one. Let’s get to it! Some photos have been edited by me and may not reflect the style of the photographer.  The Best Hikes & Treks in South America Huemul Circuit | Argentina Nearest City: El Chaltén, Argentina // Difficulty: Hard // Duration: 4 Days The Huemul Circuit may just be 63km, but it’s considered one of the most challenging treks in South America. The first day’s scenery is forests and hanging glaciers with a night spent […]

Tate Britain Or Tate Modern: Which Should You Visit?

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Obviously the answer to that question if you live in London or happen to be visiting for a long period of time is an enthusiastic, Both of them! For everyone else, if you have limited time in London and need to decide between visiting Tate Britain or Tate Modern, the information below will help you choose between the two! Before we get started, it’s important to know that both Tate Britain and Tate Modern are free to visit. (I love that about London’s museums!) So if you were thinking of limiting yourself to visiting just one due to cost, you can breathe a little sigh of relief and put them both on your itinerary. The other thing you need to know is that these are both world-renowned art museums, and one is not better than the other. They’re just different. (And don’t listen to anyone who tries to tell you otherwise!) Snapshots Of Rome: A Photo Series

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Next month, The Wanderblogger will celebrate its 5-year anniversary. Because I have an incredibly low threshold for date recollection before I reach full capacity, I don’t actually know the specific date, but hey, remembering the month and year is still doing pretty good! (That does not apply to our anniversary, Cory…) Since March of 2013, I’ve published over 350 posts, redesigned this space about 15 different times, and gone from writing 300-word posts to often more than 3,000 in a single article. A few things haven’t changed all that much, though. For instance, I still don’t have the first clue how to use social media successfully. (Like, none of it. But I’m not sure I even care.) And I still can’t let a good picture go unpublished, which explains why, after writing five other posts about this trip, I have yet another one for you today filled with several more of my favorite snapshots of Rome. I was just beginning to practice street photography on this trip, and quickly determined if there was ever a good place to be a beginner at this sort of photography, it would be Rome. Roman Forum & Palatine Hill: The Highlights Reel

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Visiting Rome, especially for the first time, without at least touching on the city’s history would be nearly impossible to do. Along with ancient Greece, Rome is considered to be the birthplace of western civilization, and evidence of that achievement looms around virtually every corner in the city…at least the architectural remnants of it, anyway. As you’d expect, the Colosseum sees the highest tourist traffic among Rome’s famous ruins, but you’ll be able to discover even more history, as well as get a glimpse into daily life during the height of the Roman Empire, by visiting the Colosseum’s sister sites – the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. If I could offer just one piece of advice, it would be to visit both of these sites with a guide. There are no pamphlets handed out at the entrances or signs throughout the sites describing what you’re looking at. Both the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are entirely just ruins, which definitely keeps them feeling authentic vs museum-like, but doesn’t help you out much if you aren’t even aware of what you’re looking at. If a guided tour isn’t an option, I recommend at least printing off maps and doing a little […]

Seaside (ft. Cascais) | Portugal

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post on street photography in Cascais is in partnership with Visit Cascais. They sponsored my stay in exchange for an honest review, but all opinions are my own! It is often the places you’ve heard the least about that surprise you. Cascais, the pretty little town on the western coast of Portugal, is one such place. While it was once saved as a retreat for the Portuguese elite, these days, Cascais has some loveliness to spare for the rest of us. And it has everything you want from a coastal town (like year-around gelato!) while never crossing the line towards tacky. Cascais is best loved for its long Atlantic coastline, but even more enthralling is the town itself. The restaurants in Cascais are always cooking classic seafood dishes passed down from generations before.  Even when the ocean is not in sight, the distinct smell of barbeque hanging in the air lets you know you must not be landlocked, at all. The town is painted with pastel hues and thick coats of white, with the occasional splash of color from a bougainvillea bush or planter box Perhaps more unexpected are the slates of crumbling tilework – the tile work that Portugal is so known for […]

Stay Strange: A Design Loft in Munich | Germany

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post is in partnership with The Flushing Meadows in Munich. I received a complimentary night in exchange for my honest review, but all opinions are my own! “F…L…U…S…H…I…N…G…M…E…A…D…O…W…S” The light bulbs flickered on in sequence, both spelling out the name of the hotel and casting light onto the otherwise vacant Fraunhoferstraße. You’d never know that Munich is home to 1.43 million people if you happen to arrive on a Wednesday after 8pm. Behind the heavy door was ambient music and an elevator directing me to the fourth floor. The high ceilings and exposed pipes in the hallway felt unapologetically cool. I was impressed and I hadn’t even checked into my room yet. Looking for a unique hotel in Munich with a distinctly cool character? Let me introduce you to the Flushing Meadows. About The Flushing Meadows The Flushing Meadows is a design hotel located in the Glockenbach. The space was initiated by Arnold/Jäger/Werner. The trio are designers, gastronomists, and architects by trade, and you’d never even guess that The Flushing Meadows is their first endeavor into the hotel industry. Road Rules: Portugal by Campervan | Portugal

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post on Portugal campervan hire was sponsored by Portugal by Van, but all opinions are my own! Vasco da Gama in Lisbon is the longest bridge in Europe, running some 17.2km. The first time I ever saw the thing, I was white knuckling the steering wheel of our just-rented, Class II campervan. My mom had come all the way to Portugal for a visit. We decided to break up our usual routine of bed & breakfasts, but we had been in our campervan for less than seven minutes and had already taken the wrong exit (… twice). I had imagined almost every detail of this Portugal campervan hire from sipping coffee in a pile of blankets to driving through the rain with the windshield wipers flipping furiously, but it seems I’d failed to actually imagine the very first step of our journey: two nervous drivers getting the hell out of Lisbon. Of course, it didn’t take long for the city to fall behind us so the feeling of fear could dissipate into freedom. We had no route in mind, but 1,794 km of coastline, a diesel engine, and everything we needed. These certainly seemed to be the ingredients for […]
