Best Breakfast in Prague

Best Breakfast in Prague

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

We don’t know about you, but we think breakfast can make or break a day, especially when you’re on vacation. We looove us some breakfast, and we wrote about breakfast in Prague extensively before. If there is a better way to start the day in Prague than just relax, let it all hang out, have a scrumptuous breakfast (booze optional but recommended) and prepare for what the day has to offer, we’d like to know. (Well sure, our Prague food tours are obviously the best way to start the day, but that’s just a shameless plug. Sorry, you gotta do whatcha gotta do.) Before we get to specific recommendations and tips, a few things you should know about breakfast in Prague in general. First, if you’re planning to eat breakfast at a popular venue, make sure you have a reservation. We’re not saying Prague is the Portland of Central Europe, but the fact is that the lines can get crazy long. Want proof? Just have a look at the cold, blank stares of the people who have waited in vain for two hours to get a table at Café Savoy on a Sunday morning.  Second, don’t expect to be wowed by creativity when it comes to breakfast in Prague. Sure, things have been getting better but cutting edge breakfast and playful dishes are strill rare and far apart. What you should expect instead is lots of eggs and comfort cooking, which is fantastic in the winter, or as a hangover cure. In the summer, things have been getting better on the “healthy lifestyle” front, with more options if you actually like quinoa and cold-fermented porridge. Also, brunch cocktails are still in their infancy here in Prague, but that should not deter you from ordering booze for brunch. Hey, you’re on vacation and you deserve it. Finally, coffee in Prague is seriously and surprisingly good, and while not every place that serves great breakfast serves great coffee, and vice versa, the overlap of the two has been growing steadily in the past few years. Therefore, if you think breakfast is incomplete without a cup of great coffee (and we totally feel you), Prague will treat you well.  Below are our favorite breakfast spots in Prague.

Karolina's Five Favorites in Prague

Karolina's Five Favorites in Prague

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

We continue with the 2nd edition of our “Prague Five Faves”, where we introduce the people behind Taste of Prague and where we spill the beans on what we actually like in Prague. Next up: Karolina. When we told Michal, the sommelier at Cafe Savoy, that Karolina would we working with us, he had to have a seat. He knew her too well, having roamed the city with her, hopping from bar to bar. He said she was perfect for us. And he was right. Yes, Karolina likes to party and we are yet to meet a person who wouldn’t want to have a drink with her, having known her for at least ten minutes. Yet she is organised and reliable. More than we are. We guess that’s what being a mom of a super cute toddler does to you. What Jan admires about Karolina is her system of “cheat days”. While Jan just goes on a eating rampage with the will power of a three-year-old in an empty candy story without adult supervision, Karolina stays calm, breaths in, breaths out and let’s the opportunity go, instead waiting for one of her cheat days when the limits are off. Eating out with her is fun: just like Zuzi, preparation seems to be a big part of Karolina’s eating out experience. She just has a plan when she walks into a restaurant and sticks to it. And we like a woman with a plan. Karolina’s also an unlimited source of incredibly funny stories and an open book who just loves people. Need a recharge? Just give Karolina some enthusiasm and affection, and you’ll get it back tenfold. And she’s our resident dim sum dumpling expert. A lover of Asian cuisine, she knows where to go and what to get. Just ask her. Trust us.

Must-eat soups in Prague

Must-eat soups in Prague

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

Soup in Prague is a life-saver when the fall hits the city: many foreign visitors end up walking more than they ever thought they would, and a bowl of hot, delicious, steaming soup is the best prevention of a ruin-your-travel cold. And the Czechs love a good soup: what Czech cuisine lacks in the appetisers department, it makes up for in the soups category. According to Chef Sahajdak, the executive chef of arguably the best restaurant in Prague, Czech food is all about sauces and soups. So where to go for the best soup in Prague? Read on.

Doi Inthanon National Park: A Fun Day Trip From Chiang Mai, Thailand

by Hui Jun Ng @ Thekeepersmap

Doi Inthanon National Park is home to Thailand’s tallest mountain (2,565m). Doi Inthanon National Park is only a two-hour drive from Chiang Mai city centre and makes a perfect day trip destination. We visited the national park last October and were pleasantly surprised by how serene and untouched the entire park was! Love off-the-beaten-path experiences? You have to check out this lush paradise. Doi Inthanon National Park is very underrated; we hardly saw any tourists other than ourselves. Doi Inthanon National Park’s Entrance Fees Adult entrance fee: 300฿ (foreigners); 50฿ (locals) Children entrance fee: 150฿ (foreigners); 20฿ (locals) Vehicle entrance fee: 20฿ per motorbike; 50฿ per car Note: The Royal Pagodas require an additional separate entrance fee of 40฿ per pax. How to get to Doi Inthanon National Park You can get to Doi Inthanon National Park by hopping on a songthaew (those red-coloured communal taxis) for 140฿ per pax. It definitely isn’t the most reliable mode of transport and the process is fairly complicated. Frankly speaking, we wouldn’t recommend it. Navigating around Doi Inthanon National Park is tough. The attractions are scattered across the national park, and you can’t just hail a taxi to get from point A to point B! Riding […]

Anna's Five Favourites in Prague

Anna's Five Favourites in Prague

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

Still going on strong with “Prague Five Faves”, where we introduce the people behind Taste of Prague and where we spill the beans on where we like to eat in Prague, and whom we like to webstalk. Next up: Anna. If there is a true food nerd in the Taste of Prague team, it must be Anna, a.k.a. the Food Pioneer. I mean, how many inches wide should be the fat layer on a 10-month old Prestice pig? Yeah, we have no idea. Let’s ask Anna! She’ll know! And you know what? She will. And her stories all involve food, foraging, working at the butcher shop, or something along those lines. Many people think that we all eat too much food. Anna doesn’t just eat it. She lives food.  And she puts all her nerdy food wisdom into practice. As a graduate of the Agricultural University, she has now turned her thesis paper into a popular elderflower soda called Divozenka, available in selected shops and cafes in Prague. You should check it out. And Silak, her beef and chicken broths, have been staples at Prague’s farmers markets, which are the places she loves the most we think.  We met her once at the Dejvice market, the last one of the season. She said she’s closing early because she has to make the round and talk to all the other vendors to say bye and see what they’re up to. And that’s Anna. Connecting with other people through food. We like that.

How To Spend A Day In Cologne aka Köln, Germany

by Hui Jun Ng @ Thekeepersmap

How many days should you spend in Cologne, Germany? Is Cologne even worth visiting? What can you do in Cologne besides visiting the Cologne Cathedral? Like many other travellers, I had all these questions about Cologne prior to my trip. After spending four days in Cologne last month, I can safely say: The 2,000-year-old German city is definitely worthy of a stopover. But if you are on a very tight travel schedule, I suggest you allocate no more than two nights in Cologne. In fact, I wouldn’t encourage any tourist to stay in Cologne for four days. Most of Cologne’s attractions are concentrated in the city centre and are easily accessible via foot – you can tick them off within a day or two. Of course, spending four days in Cologne (also known as Köln) had its perks. I had the luxury to roam around the city’s cobblestoned streets at an incredible slow pace. However, I understand that wandering around aimlessly isn’t most travellers’ cup of tea – especially when most tourists only have a day to spare! Hence, I have curated a concise one-day Cologne itinerary from my personal experience. Hope it helps! 1. The Coffee Gang – Cologne’s Best Specialty Coffee […]

Jan's Five Favourites in Prague

Jan's Five Favourites in Prague

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

If you follow us on social media, you may have notice a big change in the Taste of Prague world: we have grown. And it’s time to introduce ourselves, which is exactly what we’ll do in a series of our “Prague Five Faves”, where the people of Taste of Prague spill the beans on what they like.  We’re kicking off with Jan. He likes to call himself Taste of Prague’s “Supreme Leader”. Until Zuzi enters the room. Anyway, nerdy and mostly lovable - and “too nice” according to Karolina (Zuzi shakes her head in disapproval), Jan is a people person. Zuzi sometimes complains that when she walks off to the restroom and comes back, she can hear Jan’s voice, as he’s chatting to the other people in the restaurant. And it’s totally true. He just can’t help it. Jan has a discerning palate and appreciates great food, yet shows no detectable ownership of will-power whatsoever when it comes to various types of junk foods. Nutella, French fries, burgers and pizza, you name it, he’ll eat it. the faster the better. Apart from food, he is a linguist and translator (“That’s Doctor Jan to you!” he exclaims whenever he’s fighting with Zuzi over anything and loses) and his biggest life achievements are the facts that he was an extra in Barbara Streisand’s Yentl (true story) and went to high school with Beyonce (true story too).

Cool drinks in cool places in Prague

Cool drinks in cool places in Prague

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

Visitors come to Prague not suspecting how much walking they will do: the centre is very compact and it just makes sense to walk everywhere. But boy oh boy, when it gets hot during the Prague summer months, a day of sightseeing can get pretty exhausting. That’s when it is very important to hydrate. And does a splash of alcohol in your drink really hurt? No, we don’t think so either. Recently, a group of Australians who joined our Prague food tour spent the next afternoon in a wine bar opening seven (not a typo, seven) bottle of wine. I think they made more memories - and friends - they ever would walking the city. So really, in a way, this post is not about cool drinks in Prague. Let’s think of it as a post about making cool friends in Prague. (Yes, it is important to rationalise your day drinking on vacation, and we are happy to help.)

Zuzi's Five Favourites in Prague

Zuzi's Five Favourites in Prague

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

We're finishing our "Prague Five Faves" series where we are introducing the people behind Taste of Prague. And we saved the best for last: the founder, the enforcer, the visionary: Zuzi. "Capo di tutti capi.” "Da boss.” “The interrogator.” These are only a few things people say about Zuzi. When she’s not in the room. The truth is that Zuzi runs a very tight ship and likes to be in control of things. Because she cares. She’s not that type of person with a “whatever” attitude. Only the best will do, especially when it comes to the guests of the Taste of Prague tours. And she’s a leader with a strong - and usually the right - opinion. And she’s not afraid to voice it. You know what Zuzi thinks. As Karolina put it during one of our Taste of Prague outings: “Zuzi, you’re tough, but I have never, ever, ever thought you were a b*tch.” Wow, thank you for the compliment! (We were all tipsy.) Zuzi is also a loving foodie with a discerning palate. Heck, she even quit her good lawyer's position in big law to pursue her passion for food. She’s known for one thing: she will not finish a dish or a cup of coffee she does not like. (Unlike Jan, who can gobble things that are less then perfect because, you know, food.) Which can mean long dry coffee spells during vacations. Or the relative lack of fruits in the winter because, hey, they "don’t taste the way they should”. Yes, Zuzi demands perfection not only from people but also from fruit. But Zuzi also has one of the biggest hearts you will ever see, and if you’re a friend - or a guest - she will do whatever it takes to help you or make sure you’re happy, and she is genuinely happy for your success. She is the girl behind our “will not write about bad dining experiences” policy because she understands perfection takes time and effort. And that's what makes Zuzi so great: she is the perfect combination of demanding - which is great for what we do - and loving, which is great for everything.

Hey, the winter's coming, and that's not the time to fool around. You need to eat. Prague Michelin star restaurants guide

Prague Michelin star restaurants guide

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

What is the best Michelin star restaurant in Prague for you? That is the question. Ferrán Adriá of El Bulli fame once said that the Michelin guide is like the Vatican. Yes, it is an institution that is slow to adapt to trends and is pretty much immune to hype. That is why every new edition of Michelin’s Main Cities of Europe guide, while expected with excitement, rarely brings shock value in Prague. Also, its track record has been a bit spotty, hinting that the number of inspectors assigned for Central Europe is roughly equal to that assigned to a single arrondissement in Paris. And the year 2018 has been no exception. But more about that later. That said, the Michelin guide is still the second most prestigious Prague food guide behing our Prague Foodie Map (hey, see what we did there?) and an interesting take on Prague’s food scene from abroad. The 2018 Main Cities of Europe is out, and Prague currently has two Michelin-star restaurants and five Bib Gourmand restaurants (meaning “exceptionally good food at moderate prices“). Which one should you visit if you're in Prague for two days only? The Michelin site is super confusing, and the online reviews for all the restaurants listed can be all over the place. That’s where we come to the rescue with a small guide of Prague Michelin star restaurants put down in layman’s terms. Meaning we liken them to celebrities so that everybody understands. If you know what you're in for, you will be happy in any of these. So while we may seem to be a bit critical, bear in mind we’re mostly nitpickin’ and just generally hatin’. Hey, somebody's gotta do it. So, strap on your seat belts, here we go.

Prague Foodie Map (2nd edition) out now!

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

Oops, we did it again. (Oh, this never gets old. Thank you, Britney.)  Yes, we’re happy to announce that the second, updated and improved edition of our Prague Foodie Map, our Prague food guide, is finally out. Our curated selection of the best restaurants in Prague, along with best coffee shops, bistros and bars in town. The first edition sold out in less than six months (the recommendation in the Food & Wine magazine helped). The new, second and improved edition adds more tips and Prague travel advice, mostly based on two things: (1) our own travels, and (2) the most common questions that get asked on both of our Prague food tours.   We travel quite a bit, and if you’re following us on Instagram (if you don’t, drop everything and do it now), you know it’s mostly for food. And we’ve always wanted to have a reliable, honest guide for each city we travel to, written by a local foodie. With things that only make sense to taste, and nothing more. A guide devoid of cliches and stereotypes. With tips that get you outside of the beaten path. Basically a guide a local would endorse. So we wrote one for Prague. And now you can have it, too.

Nolan Athens Restaurant Review: Michelin Bib Gourmand Lunch < €25

by Hui Jun Ng @ Thekeepersmap

I’ll be completely honest: I chose to dine at Nolan because it was one of the most affordable restaurants featured in Athen’s Michelin Bib Gourmand Guide. It also helped that Nolan is conveniently located in the heart of the bustling Plaka neighbourhood. I have come to realise that most travellers shun away from restaurants associated with the Michelin Guide, citing ‘price’ as one of their biggest concerns. But did you know that the Michelin Guide isn’t always about featuring meals that would break the bank? For those not in the know, the Michelin’s Bib Gourmand Guide showcases high-quality restaurants with wallet-friendly menus. And as a rule of thumb, lunch is always cheaper than dinner. So always fine dine during lunchtime, not dinnertime! Nolan is not your typical fine dining establishment. In fact, you would not even label it as a fancy gourmet destination. Its interiors are simple, yet effortlessly elegant. The Food at Nolan Greek-Japanese chef Sotiris Contizas helms the popular Asian fusion restaurant. The one-page concise menu features Contizas’ unique Greek-meets-Japanese creations. Prices are very affordable and range from 3€ for vegetables to 16.50€ for short ribs. Nolan’s dishes are meant for sharing, and we were advised to order […]

Farmers markets in Prague: Where to go and what to taste

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

Prague farmers markets are, without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Prague. As a Prague attraction, they are authentic, genuine and popular among the locals. Prague markets are on throughout the year, most typically on Saturday mornings, with an ever-shorter pause in January and February. Visiting Prague farmers markets is a great idea for so many reasons, but primarily, they nicely show what is in season at the particular time of the year and what you should expect - and demand - on the menu in the best restaurants in Prague. We have picked the four best farmers markets in Prague we think are worth visiting. You can find more farmers markets in Prague, but we visit these four the most.

Five Faves: Prague tips by locals - Marcela Vuong

Five Faves: Prague tips by locals - Marcela Vuong

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

If you want to see the Sapa market, you want to see it with Marcela - project manager by day, Vietnamese food tour guide by… ehhhh… day, too (but mostly on weekends). Warm, friendly and passionate about food, she is the perfect companion to what at the beginning might seem like an impenetrable maze of warehouses and hole-in-a-wall pho places. (Did we mention she’s beautiful, too?) Heck, she gave us her own tips when we wrote about the market, and they have never failed us on our own visits. Born in Vietnam yet raised in the Bohemian town of Chomutov (“No-one comes from there,” she claims incorrectly, not knowing that Zuzi was in fact raised there, too.), she has a unique insight into both Vietnamese and Czech food and culture, and isn’t afraid to share it. What started as cooking Vietnamese dishes for her friends (and she has many, often recruited from young fashion and design circles) eventually snowballed into one of the most popular tours to Sapa. She also seems to be travelling all the time, which we often observe on social media with thinly disguised envy. So yes, we like her, and we think you’d like her too. Here’s her five faves for Prague and social media.

Hotel Review: Mayfair Bangkok Marriott Executive Apartments

by Hui Jun Ng @ Thekeepersmap

Several months ago, my friends and I stayed in Mayfair Bangkok Marriott Executive Apartments. The serviced apartment is located along Langsuan Road and is a 9-minute walk away from Chit Lom BTS Station. Foodies would be delighted to hear that Asia’s best restaurant, Gaggan, is literally beside the Marriott property. You are wrong if you think that staying at a Marriott property would be a wallet-damaging experience. You can actually score a suite at Marriott Executive Apartments Mayfair Bangkok from S$137 per night – and that works out to be only S$68.50 per person. Totally worth it, especially for a five-star reputable accommodation! Compare the hotel rates from Booking.com and Expedia.com. The Hotel Suite There are 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom and 3-bedroom suites available at Marriott Executive Apartments Mayfair Bangkok. We stayed in a 3-bedroom suite and it was perfect. Spanning across 131m², our suite was incredibly spacious and definitely way bigger than most hotel units in Bangkok’s city centre. Our suite featured a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, living area, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It was truly a home away from home. Free WIFI is available too. Martin's Five Favourites in Prague

Martin's Five Favourites in Prague

by Taste Prague @ PRAGUE FOOD BLOG - Taste of Prague Food Tours

Here's the penultimate edition of “Prague Five Faves”, where we introduce the people behind Taste of Prague. Before we finish off next week with Zuzi, we still have to introduce Martin.  You know, Czech has a formal and an informal “you” (think “tú” and “usted” in Spanish). And just like Jaromir Jagr, the Czech ice-hockey legend and Jan’s future husband (if his dream/nightmare becomes a reality), Martin hasn’t used the formal “you” in years. Yup, you had Martin at “hello”. You’re friends now.  He also has a very interesting background (and we don’t meant that physically): How on earth does a psychotherapist with an Austrian passport born in the Czech Republic become a butcher in Prague? Is it because stabbing dead flesh with a knife gives you more job satisfaction than dealing with problems of people who are alive? Well, that’s Jan’s theory. The fact is we hit it off the instant he appeared behind the counter of the Nase maso butcher shop, and we’ve been hitting it off ever since. He’s a big guy with an even bigger heart who’s main problem is that he doesn’t call Zuzi after the tour to tell her how it went soon enough because he just wants to make sure you don’t get lost on your way to the hotel so he just takes you there. Or for a beer. And he loves food. Having travelled through most of the world (under conditions we sometimes find hard to believe - do commercial aircrafts really have a spare seat in the back?) and eaten just about anything, Martin knows good food and spends most of his free time trying to recreate the food memories he has gathered over the years. Want to meet him on Sunday? Check out the Vietnamese Sapa market, or the new Mexican joint that has just opened. Do you want to meet him at night? Just visit a popular pub or club. Because he just loves company, and the company loves him back.

Gaggan Restaurant Review: 25-Course Dinner At Asia’s Best Restaurant

by Hui Jun Ng @ Thekeepersmap

Contemporary Indian restaurant Gaggan was bestowed the honourable title of Asia’s Best Restaurant in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Achieving such extraordinary results in three consecutive years is something many chefs can only dream of. And that’s not it. Gaggan is ranked as the 7th best restaurant in the world, and was also recently awarded two Michelin stars despite the Kolkata-born chef’s hostile attitude towards the reputable guide. “Don’t judge Bangkok with French standard. Please. We are not Le Gaggan. We are not French. We are Asians.” With such a phenomenal success, most restaurateurs would already be exploring the possibility of opening franchises overseas and whatnot. But chef Gaggan Anand surprised the world with a completely unexpected announcement: Gaggan will be shutting its doors in 2020. WHAT!? “Every restaurant has a 10-year life,” said Gaggan. The award-winning chef has already made plans to wind up the Bangkok restaurant and venture into Japan next. I have always wanted to dine at Gaggan, but my booking requests had been futile. Scoring a reservation is tough. No surprise there, since Gaggan reportedly receives 500 booking requests on a daily basis. I thought I was never going to get the opportunity to dine at Gaggan… So how did […]
