9 Reasons You’ll Never Want to Leave Cascais | Portugal

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post on my favorite things to do in Cascais is in partnership with Visit Cascais. They sponsored my stay in exchange for an honest review, but all opinions are my own! It’s not so hard to imagine Cascais as a seaside painting. You know the kind: a scene of fisherman skiffs bobbing about on a harbor with a whitewashed lighthouse and rustic houses in the background? And when you walk around Cascais, it feels that idyllic, too. The town once favored as a retreat for Portuguese royals has maintained a certain old world charm that is particularly hard to come by these days. Many of the best things to do in Cascais don’t involve doing much at all, and it’s the slow pace of life that makes this place great. Want to explore one of the cutest cities on the coast of Portugal? Here are nine reasons you’ll probably never want to leave Cascais. 1. The sea is pretty great Just calling it a beach town would sell Cascais short, but its seaside location is definitely the best part. The rocky coastline is lovely and scattered with viewpoints where you can stop and stare. There are four major beaches […]

Hanoi’s lantern festival

by Thuc Nguyen @ Paloma Motorbike Tours

An exhibition has revived the old spirit as Vietnam counts down to the full moon on Wednesday night. Lanterns for sale on Hang Gai Street during the Mid-Autumn Festival in 1926. The festival peaks on the full moon of the eighth lunar month, which falls on Wednesday this week. Children are drawn to a fish lantern outside a shop on Hang Gai in the Old Quarter. Star-shaped lanterns, the most popular toy during the festival, are made on the sidewalk. A wooden fighting roosters toy in a photo captured in 1937. Animals made from rice flour were popular in Hanoi nearly a century ago. These toys are still on sale in Vietnamese cities, but they now appeal more to nostalgic adults. How to Avoid Overtourism in Barcelona (Without Avoiding Barcelona)

Eating All the Food in Hanoi (And Another Street Food Tour!) - Trailing Rachel

Eating All the Food in Hanoi (And Another Street Food Tour!) - Trailing Rachel

Trailing Rachel

Hanoi’s food scene was everything I’d expected it to be. I tried SO much new stuff in the week that I was there. Though with how crazy plentiful the street food is, the lack of sidewalk space to maneuver around on, and the absolute chaos of motorbikes zipping by, it can be a little overwhelming to decide what your next meal will be. So the solution is simple: eat all the food in Hanoi. Of course, I’m exaggerating. But really, what you should do is try everything you see that looks good (or smells good – literally, sometimes we just followed delicious smells to find the snacks we wanted). You’re never too full for another spring roll, or banh mi… or egg coffee. The best food I’ve had so far has been on the street or at a small place that specializes in only a few or maybe even just one dish. Don’t, just don’t enter a proper restaurant with closed doors or a man out front waving a menu and yelling at you. A big thanks to Anna at Slightly Astray for providing me with what turned out to be a pocket guide (more like a Bible, really) to the food in Hanoi, both in …

My 2017 Travel Recap – Month by Month

by Rachel @ Trailing Rachel

Oh man, I think I’ve missed the whole New Year’s resolution and recap-of-the-past-year blog post bandwagon. But just for giggles, I’m gonna try it. Since I’ve been so slack giving you the latest on my life, here’s what I got up to this year… 2017 was all about making that change from full-time, carefree, backpacker-style traveling to freelancing. That meant camping, housesitting, and having our own car and (at times) our own temporary home. It came with some struggles and rough edges, and it was not always as pretty as these photos entail. But the flexibility to live in a different country every other month is just incredible. Destination wise, while it was awesome and beautiful, I found that New Zealand isn’t my most favorite travel destination in the world, that I’m still in love with Southeast Asia, that Portugal is really all it’s cracked up to be, and that it’s still good to go home occasionally. January Marko and I rang in the New Year sending off a paper lantern into the unbelievably beautiful night sky of Chiang Mai, Thailand surrounded by tons of other glowing lanterns. We ate great tons of khao soi and fried chicken, joined a […]

7 winter warmers to ward off the cold in Hanoi

by Thuc Nguyen @ Paloma Motorbike Tours

Follow the locals to nameless roadside eateries as the cold snap bites in Vietnam’s capital. Snails Unlike the spicy snails that are carefully fried or grilled in Saigon, the snails served on cold days in Hanoi are simply boiled. Feel the steam from the snails served with ginger sauce and lemongrass. Snails tend to appear in the rivers around Hanoi between autumn and winter. Try the tasty treats in small restaurants at 5 Tong Duy Tan, 1 Dinh Liet, 34A Tran Phu and 88 Cua Bac. Sweet dumplings These dumplings are made from sticky rice stuffed with mung beans or black sesame. The rice balls are then soaked in ginger syrup and served hot. Head to Hang Dieu, Quan Thanh or Tay Ho far a sample of these sweet balls from either age-old eateries or street vendors. Rib porridge Hanoi people love rib porridge and it’s needless to say why this hot congee with quay(fried dough) is a perfect choice for a cold day. There’s a nameless roadside stall at 2A Ly Quoc Su Street that man locals say serves the best rib porridge in Hanoi. You can also find this hot treat in Dong Xuan Market. Cassava dessert Cooked cassava paired with...

Two Months in Portugal: My Summer in Review, Part 2

by Rachel @ Trailing Rachel

I didn’t plan to spend most of my summer in Portugal. I didn’t plan to stay for nearly two months. But I did… and it was phenomenal. Ever just KNOW you’ll love a place before you get there? That’s how I felt about Portugal. Beautiful, affordable, sunny, great wine, amazing beaches? Sign me up. Last year I spent a month in Spain – I know, poor me – and I kept hearing how every backpacker moving through Seville was heading to the Portuguese beach town of Lagos. And I was sad. Because I was going to France instead. (Okay, okay, I ended up spending a great couple of days in the Loire Valley and a week getting silly with my friends in Paris, so it was an overall win. I’m not complaining.) So when I convinced my family to spend their summer vacay in Portugal, that gave me an excuse to finally make my way back to this much anticipated Euro-destination. Via Thailand, of course. Nothin’ like that Auckland > Gold Coast > Kuala Lumpur > Bangkok > London > Madrid > Porto flight path. (Yeah, holy carbon footprint, I should plant some trees this year!) First Stop: Porto Pushed out of Thailand because of that 30-day visa […]

A Second Story (ft. Munich) | Germany

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post is in partnership with #SimplyMunich. I received a complimentary Munich sightseeing bus tour with Gray Line, but all opinions are my own! My approach to Munich was a bit like the Going on a Bear Hunt poem. If you can’t go over it, can’t go under it, can’t go around it, you’ve got to go through it. You see, I didn’t immediately feel a connection with Munich. It was beautiful, for sure, but it felt at first like the kind of place where you’re free to look, but not touch. There were palaces (oh the palaces!) and gothic churches. The city was littered with royal residences and the sidewalks weren’t caked with chewed gum like I’d come to expect in Berlin. There were refined restaurants and cocktail bars and designer stores that I wouldn’t dare enter in Levis. I needed another way to connect with the city that didn’t involve so much snubbing, and so I went up. Up to the second story of a sightseeing bus. While bus tours aren’t normally my scene, I’ve taken a liking to this method of exploring a city over the past few years. Rather than getting lost in a tangle of U-bahn […]

Saigon to Hanoi by Motorbike: 5 Suggested Routes

by Thuc Nguyen @ Paloma Motorbike Tours

Riding from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike is probably the most popular road trip in Vietnam, and it’s unquestionably one of the best ways to experience the country. For years, travellers simply took the most obvious route: Highway 1. Today, however, thanks to ambitious road building programs, there are far more scenic, pleasant and less trodden ways to ride between the country’s two main cities. Having ridden south to north on numerous occasions (the first time, predictably, on Highway 1), I’ve put together the following 5 suggested motorbike routes from Saigon to Hanoi, so that travellers who are planning this road trip have more of an idea of the kind of options available to them. 1. THE CLASSIC: Total Distance: 2,770km Average Duration: 2-4 weeks Road Conditions: paved rural & coastal back-roads, new & old highways Navigation: mostly simple, some tricky bits in central areas Scenery: coast, highlands, mountains, limestone, cities, villages, cultural sites DESCRIPTION: Weaving a course between coast and highlands, The Classic route is equal parts beach and mountain. Quiet, stunning coastal roads in the south and central provinces yield to a mighty landscape of limestone karsts on the Ho Chi Minh Road in the north-central region. Popular towns and sights, such as Mui...

There were two main things on my radar when heading to Penang, Malaysia. First: street food; and second: street art. Penang, and in particular its capital George Town, has a compelling cultural scene that flourished after George Town was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The city’s cultural identity was cemented when the Penang State

Stay Strange: The Eclectic Bungalows in Estoril | Portugal

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post is in partnership with Lucky’s Guest House & Visit Cascais. I received a complimentary stay at their hotel in Estoril exchange for my honest review, but all opinions are my own! There are two types of talented interior decorators: those who assemble rooms by way of online orders and showroom visits, and those who forage and find and create something inspired. Lucky’s Guest House is definitely the latter. The decor is neither a perfect matching of elements nor adhering to any particular design style. Rather, it is design-by-feeling. Pieces collected from throughout the ages sit alongside faux furs, Buddhist statues, and champagne bottles in chrome buckets. You’ll find the lounge to be a shrine to in-house Muay Thai champion (we’ll get into that later) and the outdoor chill out area an eclectic mix of woven pillows, paper lanterns, and shipping palette furniture. Lucky’s Guest House is somehow overstated and super comfy at the exact same time, and that’s what makes it the coolest little hotel in Estoril. Want to stay strange? Here’s a look inside the very quirky Lucky’s Guest House. About Lucky’s Guest House Maria Villar & Nuno Neves created Lucky’s Guest House with loftier ambitions than most […]

Six reasons why summer (kinda) rhymes with sugar in Vietnam

by Thuc Nguyen @ Paloma Motorbike Tours

There are millions of ways to enjoy the cool, sweet taste of summer in Vietnam, so here are some of our favorites. Che The sweet, slippery soup is one of the most iconic Vietnamese desserts. There are dozens of versions, ranging from a simple glass of just lotus seeds to a rainbow of beans, roots, cassava and jelly cubes. Crowded che stands can be found in most big markets across the country, including Nam Dong in Hanoi and Ben Thanh in Ho Chi Minh City. For something different, tourists can try the one served at the Cambodian market in the southern city. The shop is owned by a Vietnamese man who grew up in Cambodia but returned in the 1970s, serving the best of both Cambodian and Vietamese desserts. A serving usually costs $1 or less. Ice-cream in a coconut shell One scoop of ice-cream for the summer, or two? Well, it might be easier if you just have it all in a coconut. Kem dua is a special Vietnamese version of ice-cream served in a coconut shell topped with coconut strips, peanuts and chocolate sauce. The best way to eat it is to dig the spoon deep and take a full bite...

El Nido: Because Everybody’s Doing It

by Rachel @ Trailing Rachel

What’s that you say? I was in the Philippines last year? That’s true. But since it’s been one of my fave places so far, I felt like I needed to wrap it up properly. And everybody visits the island of Palawan when they go to the Philippines… El Nido is the shockingly beautiful, shockingly fun spot in the Philippines that backpackers flock to. Of course, like everywhere in the Philippines, it ain’t THAT easy to get to. From Cebu it’s a short flight to Puerto Princesa, a bit of haggling for a 5 or 6 hour sweaty van ride (though they promise “It’s 4 hours only!”), and you’re there! After spending a little too much time in other island destinations like Boracay and Malapascua, I didn’t have many of my 30 days in the ‘Peens left for anywhere else except El Nido and Coron. If I could do it again (and I MIGHT!) I’d try to hit up Port Barton. It’s a little paradise-like place on Palawan that folks say resembles El Nido ten years ago. El Nido isn’t much upon first glance. It’s a dusty, colorful, slightly rundown beach town. Okay, so it was dark when I finally got […]

Let’s Get the Hell Out of Here! | Anywhere

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

Do you ever have the feeling that you’ve been clicking away on your keyboard for too long and if you sit through another meeting/send another email/answer another phone call you might actually implode? That’s your sign. You, my dear, need a break. I’ve been there too. It can be tempting to quit it all when you hit this point (and I’m probably not the person to advise against this…) but sometimes the solution is far simpler than that. Maybe all you really need is a trip on the calendar to offer an end in sight. But with a whole world to choose from and just a little bit of time, you’ll inevitably start to wonder “where should I go, anyway?”. You could head to Southeast Asia for spicy bowls of noodles on streetside plastic stools. Maybe you could dip down to South America to hike through palm forests and spend your nights asleep in a tent. You could pick a spot in Europe for glasses of wine in pretty little cafés that overlook buildings far older than we’ve got back at home. Or, you could even fly across the country and road trip your way back by campervan. The options are seriously endless. […]

Capital connection: The 7 bridges of Hanoi

by Thuc Nguyen @ Paloma Motorbike Tours

Nhat Tan Bridge Nhat Tan Bridge, also known as the Vietnam – Japan Friendship Bridge, was inaugurated in January 2015. It is the first cable-stayed bridge in Hanoi with a total length of 8.9km (5.5 miles) with five spans, representing the capital city’s five ancient gates, crossing the Red River. The project had total investment of VND13,600 billion ($598 million), split between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Vietnamese government. The bridge was opened for public together with Nhat Tan – Noi Bai Highway which helps shorten travel time between Noi Bai International Airport and Hanoi’s center. Dong Tru Bridge Dong Tru Bridge opened to traffic in October 2014. The 1.1km bridge crossing the Duong River in Long Bien District cost VND882 billion and has eight lanes. It is 55m wide and has two 80m side-spans and a 120m central span. The bridge was built using concrete-filled steel arches, the first time this technology had been used in Southeast Asia. It is also the widest bridge in Vietnam. Thang Long Bridge Thang Long Bridge was built from 1974 to 1985. The 3,250-meter long bridge connects the city with Noi Bai Airport and was considered a symbol of Vietnam-Soviet relations....

What is Portuguese Food, Anyway? | Portugal

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post on Portuguese food & restaurants in Cascais is in partnership with Visit Cascais. Some meals were covered in exchange for an honest review, but all opinions are my own. When it comes to ordering food in Portugal “the best thing on the menu” seems to mean “everything on the menu”. “No more” turns into “something small” that is actually something completely normal sized when it finally makes it to your table. Italian grandmothers have got nothing on Portuguese waiters when it comes to filling your plate, and that’s a fact. But I guess if I’m going to eat too much of anything, let it be the briny oysters and freshly caught sea bass at some quirky little restaurant in Cascais. I’ve spent a lot of time wondering why Portuguese food has never achieved the notoriety of its Mediterranean neighbors. Tapas bars and Italian restaurants are everywhere, but finding a Portuguese restaurant that serves Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá anywhere outside of Portugal takes serious work. My trip to Portugal was started on a press trip to Cascais, meaning I approached dining a bit differently than I normally would. Rather than street side stalls, I holed up at traditional restaurants in […]

Travel Budget – 6 Weeks in Vietnam

Last year, we spent 6 weeks in Vietnam as part of our six-month backpacking trip. If we started with the idea of staying within a budget, we quickly realised that we didn’t want our trip to be entirely dictated by money. After Hawaii, we kept our budget loose, without going crazy either, even if it meant that we needed to re-think our itinerary.

From Saranda to Ksamil in Beaches – The End of Albania

by Rachel @ Trailing Rachel

Sorry for the cliffhanger, guys. Things got a little challenging there for a minute – what with all the freelancing and entertaining guests while traveling. I do neglect the blog when I’m feeling less motivated. I’m sorry for being the worst. Look, Albania is awesome. My biggest regret (other than not spending more time there) is that I didn’t write this post sooner and it’s now the end of the summer season, and I may have deprived some people of a tiny source of Internet information for their Balkans travel planning… because there’s not a lot out there on Albania. Because, trust me, this place is exceptional. And it’s still cool in September even when the crowds have died down! When people ask me where I’ve got to return to, Albania is at the top of my list. Still. One year later and I feel like I haven’t delved beneath the enigmatic exterior that is Albania and it’s wonderfully welcoming yet stoic people. There are some places that are easy to love. There are some places with simple logistics and a well-worn tourist trail. And there are some places where you have to convince your travel companion that you’ve gotta […]

Gastronomic gastropods- Vietnamese loves snails !

by Thuc Nguyen @ Paloma Motorbike Tours

From Michelin-starred fine dining, to chili-laden, beer-swilling, street-food staple, the humble snail takes many forms. Oysters, lobsters, sushi and snails; all now “posh” and expensive elements of global food culture. They were, however, once all considered to be the food of the lower-classes. In fact, oysters were so plentiful during the European colonization of the Americas that their crushed shells were a common component in brick making. Likewise, the practice of wrapping raw fish (and other meats) in rice was, many centuries ago, a common way for Japanese farmers and fishermen to preserve food for several months at a time. And then there’s lobster, that ubiquitous element of modern fine dining. According to a report on the creature’s recent popularity by the U.K.’s Telegraphnewspaper, the clawed crustacean was “once not deemed worthy for anything other than the ‘lowest of the low.’” It’s funny how things change. Add a bit of gold leaf, a smear of pureed veg, a froth of salty foam, and a jacked-up price tag, and suddenly the cuisine of the working classes jumps a few steps up the social ladder. As with bread, beef, carrots and coffee, it would be easy to assume that the practice of...

Green lotus tea

by Thuc Nguyen @ Paloma Motorbike Tours

Green lotus tea has other names: trà sen, chè sen or chè ướp sen (in Vietnamese) Vietnamese lotus tea is a type of green tea that already absorbed the scent of lotus. Lotus is a type of flower that grows in a lake, and it symbolizes beauty, purity, and good fortune in Vietnam.  Traditionally, workers will row out to the lake in the middle of the night when nectar of the lotus is at its fullest. Then, they will carefully open up all petals of the flower, fill it with green tea leaves (without making it wet), tie the petals together tightly with string, and let tea sits and absorbs the scents overnight. To collect the tea, workers have to row out to the lake again in the morning, open up the flower petals, and harvest the natural lotus scented green tea. Due to the natural process of making lotus tea, it is considered an art in Vietnam. HISTORY Lotus tea was originally created for King Tu Duc during the 19th century Nguyen Dynasty, but the people also love the art of making tea and it became a custom for them to take their boats out onto the ponds and...

Observations & Ramblings From Two Months Camping Around New Zealand

by Rachel @ Trailing Rachel

Here are a few things that I’ve noticed while camping and housesitting here in New Zealand for the past two and a half months. This post is a bit of a ramble (kinda like this one) so enjoy… New Zealand is expensive. I knew it would be. But like, it’s more expensive than home. Gas and booze especially. And it kills me that I can’t really afford to eat out at all the great-looking restaurants while staying on budget. Losing things in the car makes me feel like I’m losing my mind. When you have literally all of your belongings in a finite space and you can’t find your chapstick, it’s excruciating. Because you know it’s in there somewhere and you’ve just misplaced it, or it’s fallen out of the car never to be seen again… Related: I have to stop setting things on top of the car. Every drive here is beautiful. There’s rarely a time when you’re not looking out the window at some gorgeous view of mountains, lakes, or coastlines. It’s absurd really. It’s also great because the radio in our car doesn’t work anymore… All backpackers here have the same stuff. It’s like, “Oh you have that tent? […]

Hanoi’s notorious black market, where anything goes

by Thuc Nguyen @ Paloma Motorbike Tours

Don’t expect a receipt if you’re looking to buy anything from this market. Most Hanoians would be flummoxed if you asked them where Hoa Binh Market is, but if you asked them about Chợ Giời, it would be a different story. The name Chợ Giời tells a story itself as its earliest vendors used to gather in an open-air spot to sell pretty much everything they owned, hence the name “Giời”, meaning sky, God and outdoors in Vietnamese. The market is believed to have opened in 1955 on the corner of two streets, but since then it has expanded to more than four streets and two big alleys along the busy thoroughfares of Hue and Hang Bai. In Chợ Giời, vendors sell everything from car parts and metal springs to TV remotes. Some old, some new, some possibly stolen. The majority of the goods are mechanical items, and here you can find the tiniest screwdrivers to rare 1980’s amplifiers all under the same roof. Following the war and the subsidy period, Chợ Giời was split down into different departments. Yen Bai 2 Street was known for its CDs and DVDs  —  before the Internet and Youtube changed all that. Nguyen Cong Tru Street draws vendors selling...

Coron: Drinking and Diving in the Philippines

by Rachel @ Trailing Rachel

See what I did there, with the title? Hilarious right? Sometimes I hate myself… We left off as I made it onto a seven-hour ferry from El Nido to Coron in the nick of time… while suffering from a mild hangover due to the prior evening’s birthday festivities. So actually, it wasn’t that bad. Yeah we were packed in there, but there was also plenty of room to sit and read outside, rest my head on a pile of life jackets functioning as a makeshift pillow, and (surprise!) lunch was included. It was a beautiful – and calm, thank god – day out on the ocean. Gotta love spending your birthday in transit! But OH Coron, you were worth it. And I spent my birthday in luxury – because $90 a night in the Philippines will buy you quite a bit of luxury – with a king size bed, hot shower, and HBO Movies on TV. I mean I still didn’t have wifi, but ya win some, ya lose some, right?! I decided to treat myself to two nights in a real hotel with a pool and breakfast included. And then I did what everybody comes to Coron to do… ^ Take this picture.^ […]

While it was once saved as a retreat for the Portuguese elite, these days, Cascais has some loveliness to spare for the rest of us. And it has everything you want from a coastal town (like year-around gelato!) while never crossing the line towards tacky. Cascais is best loved for its long Atlantic coastline, but even more enthralling is the town itself. The restaurants in Cascais are always cooking classic seafood dishes passed down from generations before.  Even when the ocean is not in sight, the distinct smell of barbeque hanging in the air lets you know you must not be landlocked, at all. The town is painted with pastel hues and thick coats of white, with the occasional splash of color from a bougainvillea bush or planter box Perhaps more unexpected are the slates of crumbling tilework – the tile work that Portugal is so known for […]

Stay Strange: A Design Loft in Munich | Germany

by Taylor Record @ Travel Outlandish

This post is in partnership with The Flushing Meadows in Munich. I received a complimentary night in exchange for my honest review, but all opinions are my own! “F…L…U…S…H…I…N…G…M…E…A…D…O…W…S” The light bulbs flickered on in sequence, both spelling out the name of the hotel and casting light onto the otherwise vacant Fraunhoferstraße. You’d never know that Munich is home to 1.43 million people if you happen to arrive on a Wednesday after 8pm. Behind the heavy door was ambient music and an elevator directing me to the fourth floor. The high ceilings and exposed pipes in the hallway felt unapologetically cool. I was impressed and I hadn’t even checked into my room yet. Looking for a unique hotel in Munich with a distinctly cool character? Let me introduce you to the Flushing Meadows. About The Flushing Meadows The Flushing Meadows is a design hotel located in the Glockenbach. The space was initiated by Arnold/Jäger/Werner. The trio are designers, gastronomists, and architects by trade, and you’d never even guess that The Flushing Meadows is their first endeavor into the hotel industry. Sleep There are 4 types of rooms available at The Flushing Meadows: the Single, the Studio, the Penthouse, and the Loft. Each […]

Autumn spirit served up in the form of rice flakes by Hanoi village

by Thuc Nguyen @ Paloma Motorbike Tours

Like pumpkins and candy at Halloween, rice flakes are a must during the fall in the capital. It is an unwritten rule that when you talk about autumn in Hanoi, you have to mention rice flakes. No one knows when the flat sticky rice first became an autumn delicacy in the capital, but the art of making the tasty snack has been well-preserved for more than a century in Me Tri Village. More than 50 households in this village have their fires burning for rice flakes twice a year, depending on the harvest season. Experience shows that rice picked during fall makes the best rice flakes because it is sweeter and more aromatic. The sticky rice used for rice flakes should come from young plants. Me Tri Village in Nam Tu Liem District and Vong Village in Cau Giay District are the most famous places in the north for this treat. These women are removing the grains from paddy flowers. The grains are soaked in water. The tailings, which float to the surface, are removed. The grains are roasted for two hours.  Then they are ground under a wooden pestle, and the ground grains are screened again to remove all the husks. The final product is wrapped in lotus leaves, and these green-yellow...

The Muslim Guide to Buying Food Products in a European Supermarket

The Beaches in Dhërmi, Albania are Amazing!

by Rachel @ Trailing Rachel

Wait… Albania? Easily one of my favorite experiences from the past year and a half was an impromptu trip to the Balkans at the end of the summer. When Western Europe was getting a little harsh on the budget and same-y, the Eastern Bloc countries with their unpretentious vibes and complicated history provided a much-needed reprieve. Especially Albania. There’s incredible scenery, great hospitality, an interesting mix of Islam and Christianity, shockingly good food, and uhhh Albanian beaches are like whoa. At the risk of sounding cheesy and all “I’m out here finding myself,” have you ever been somewhere you just felt instantly comfortable and at ease? That’s how I felt in the little coastal village of Dhërmi. Like I’d returned to a past life. Okay, now we’re getting really heavy. I’ll stop. It was so calm and stunningly gorgeous, and the people were so welcoming and friendly that I genuinely felt like I could just stay there. I’d read, I’d sit on the beach, I’d learn to make sheep’s cheese and bread from the lady who owned the small hotel where we stayed. All that is to say… I’ll have to return. It was the epitome of laid back. And that’s probably due to the fact […]

Fancy one of the world’s greatest food experiences? Try Hanoi

by Thuc Nguyen @ Paloma Motorbike Tours

Tourists eat out late at night in Hanoi. Photo by VnExpress/Giang Huy The Telegraph gets its teeth into Hanoi cuisine, and it’s not the famous ‘pho’ or Obama’s ‘bun cha’ Many people are drawn to a destination just because of how well it triggers their appetite, and for that reason, Hanoi is one of the world’s greatest cities to visit, The Telegraph recommends. The U.K. newspaper published a list of “the world’s 17 greatest cities for food” on Sunday and the Vietnamese capital grabbed second spot, after Tokyo. “Hanoi’s compact old center is arguably the better place to sample the balance of salt, sweet, sour and spice in Vietnamese cuisine,” it said, comparing the city with the popular southern metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City, which is “more international”. Hanoi is where one can take to the streets and eat like a local, it said. The city offers some of the most popular Vietnamese dishes such as “banh mi”, a baguette usually filled with grilled pork, meatballs or cold cuts, cucumber, cilantro, pickled carrots, liver pâté and a swipe of mayonnaise, or “com...
