Food Review: Noodle Thai Thai Kitchen at Beach Road | This Hidden Gem is one of the Best Thai Restaurant in Singapore

Food Review: Noodle Thai Thai Kitchen at Beach Road | This Hidden Gem is one of the Best Thai Restaurant in Singapore

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place We are always on the lookout for hidden gems, and one restaurant which we have no regrets trying is Noodle Thai Thai Kitchen at Beach Road. If I were to walk past it, I probably wouldn’t have paid much attention as it looks like an ordinary Thai eatery with a very simple outlook and interior. Beauty is only skin deep. I learned from the staff that the restaurant has only been opened for slightly more than a year, run by a husband and wife team. I spoke to Keith, the owner of Noodle Thai Thai Kitchen, who also shared with us that his wife is Thai and their dishes take influence from Northern Thai, Bangkok, other parts of Thailand with some of their original creations as well. For a start, all is promising. There’s another Noodle Thai Thai Kitchen branch at Zhongshan Mall in Balestier, although this branch only offer a smaller range of selections. The Food The menu is extensive to say the least, with the usual popular Thai dishes like Phad Thai and Tom Yum soup. We decided to skip the dishes we can usually find elsewhere and go for the ones which are more unique [...]

Food Review: Le Binchotan at Gemmill Lane is more than just a Bar | French-Japanese Dishes are the Highlights

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place We revisited Le Binchotan recently, the tunnel lookalike restaurant at one of the most secret dining lane in Singapore, Gemmill Lane right next to Gemmills and Maggie Joan’s. While Chef Jeremmy used to be the head chef at this French-Japanese restaurant and bar, he has now doubled up as Chef-owner of the 35-pax restaurant. The Food While some of the signature dishes on the menu remains, more than half of the dishes have been refreshed. The dishes are mainly prepared from Japanese and French ingredients, using French cooking techniques and traditional Japanese grilling method over the binchotan, or charcoal. The drinks menu here features a good mix of cocktail and wine selections. I tried the signature Le Binchotan (S$23) cocktail, which has notes of sweetness, sourness, bitterness and spiciness, a pretty interesting take on life if I were to be philosophical about it. One dish for a promising start is the Uni and Caviar (S$25). We all know fresh uni can’t go wrong, but what this version sets it apart from others is the smooth pudding-like texture with beautiful hints of Japanese corn in bacon broth and charred corn. The bafun uni here is also topped with what [...]

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place Opened by the same team behind FOC Restaurant at Hong Kong Street, FOC Pim Pam at Orchard Road is a more fun and casual dining concept in comparison. In fact, FOC means ‘fire’ in Catalan while PIM Pam means ‘quick and easy’ in Spanish, so you get the drift here. The space at FOC Pim Pam is huge for a typical restaurant in Singapore. It went through a revamp of its space and concept recently, with more distinct zones like the Tapas Bar, Main Dining Room, Private Dining Room, Bar and outdoor Terrace. Casual tapas menu is available at the Tapas Bar and Terrace, while the full menu at the Main Dining Room. The Food We started with some tapas bites from the Tapas Bar, such as the Pim Pam Croquetas (S$5 – 6 for 2 pieces on Tapas Menu; S$10 – 12 for 4 pieces on Main Menu), Patatas Bravas (S$6 Tapas Menu; S$10 on Main Menu) and Ibérico Cold Cuts Platter (S$13 (half) / S$24 (full) on Tapas Menu; S$24 on Main Menu).  We live in a world that is constantly filled with activity. For some people, it is difficult to settle down to the point that they can get a good night’s rest. It may seem impossible to relax. You may feel that it is because the bed is not comfortable enough or you simply aren’t tired enough to sleep. Food Review: Liberty Coffee Bar at Jalan Besar | Local Coffee Roaster (finally) opens Cafe & Retail Space

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place Mention local coffee roasters and Liberty Coffee Bar is definitely one of the names to come to our minds. The brand was created back in 2010 with no café space, and we are really glad that their first café space has opened a week ago in hipster Jalan Besar right beside Kam Leng Boutique Hotel and few doors down from CHAR Restaurant. If you are looking for other dining inspirations in Jalan Besar, here is our list of recommendations in this enclave. With a long shophouse setting, the entrance is a mini retail space where you can get your hands on its beans and merchandise. The setting is casual with simple tones of predominantly wood, white and black. The Food With a Kitchen at the back of the café, the food menu is not huge but sufficient enough, with casual selections such as sandwiches, pastas and sides like fries with beef bolognese and crispy chicken wings. We skipped food this time and went straight for the coffee. The Latte (S$5) is not too acidic with faint hints of fruity and nutty notes and a medium body. We also tried the Drip (S$4) coffee, which I personally enjoyed more. [...]

Food Review: Long Qing Specialty Hotpot (隆庆) at Hong Kong Street | Returning for its Spicy Ma La Soup and Quality Steamboat Ingredients

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place Located along Hong Kong Street, this almost 2-year-old steamboat restaurant Long Qing Specialty Hotpot (隆庆) has been on our radar for some time. Frankly, we were glad to have finally made it here during the Chinese New Year period this year. Small setup, with what looks like less than 30 seats, Long Qing was packed with return guests during our visit. Should you be looking to visit Long Qing any time soon, we do recommend you to make a reservation well ahead of your visit. For more inspirations on where to head for your next steamboat gathering, check out our list of Best Steamboats in Singapore. The Food The concept around Long Qing revolves around quality ingredients, in a more home-styled service model as the restaurant does not charge its guests service charge. To start, their Soup Base (S$17) selections include the signature Wild Mushroom, Spicy Ma La, Tomato Soup, Shark’s Fin Melon Herbal Soup, Lotus Root & Lily Bulb Soup, and the base broth for all their soup options here, the Pork Bone Clear Broth. If your preference is to go for 2 Soup Base, that will be priced at S$25. We went for the selection of Spicy [...]

The Place When we visited Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, we wanted to go for a familiar luxury brand and were lucky to have stayed at Shangri-La Colombo. With grand and elegant lobby to welcome guests, the hotel is part of One Galle Face development and is located within walking distance to Galle Beach. This is the second Shangri-La property in Sri Lanka after Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa located at the south-eastern coast of the island. The Room With a total of about 500 rooms, this is a fairly huge property in Sri Lanka. I stayed in the Deluxe Ocean View Room which boasts views of the hotel’s swimming pool, the Indian Ocean and Galle Face Green. The design of the room is contemporary and elegant, and I especially love the huge bathroom which is luxuriously equipped with Spa Ceylon bath amenities. There is both a walk-in shower and separate bathtub. At 42 sqm, this is definitely a good and comfortable size to sleep in. Wifi access is very important for me, and I am very satisfied with the complimentary high-speed [...]

Food Review: District Sushi at Sunshine Plaza | Inexpensive S$13 Bara Chirashi Don in Singapore

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place The cheapest Chirashi Don in Singapore? I headed down to District Sushi, a two months old restaurant located at Sunshine Plaza to rival Sushiro at Thomson Plaza. The space is a no frills setting, with simple interior and a relatively young dining audience given that NAFA is right opposite. The main draw of District Sushi, other than the sushi offerings is no doubt the Bara-Chirashi Don, which created quite a stir back in last November and December when it was only going at S$10 nett. The good news is that there is no GST and service charge here. The Food The menu is a 2-page offering of mainly Bara-Chirashi Don, Kaisen Don, Sushi and Donburi. I went straight for the Bara-Chirashi Don (S$13) topped with salmon, tuna, octopus and poached prawn. For the price, the portions are really quite decent for me though I can’t say the same for the quality. The rice is not as fragrant here, while of quality of the sashimi chunks are at most passable. At a similar price range, I much prefer the version at Sushiro which is more value for money for me. That said, the price point is definitely an alluring [...]

Tiger Arena in Hue

Tiger Arena or Ho Quyen (Vietnamese) is located on the south bank of the Perfume River and 4km from the Citadel, Royal Arena was where duels between trained elephants and tigers were arranged for the entertainment of the Nguyen Court and the public. These occasions were also the elephant’s practice combats. Mortal fighting between the beats offered heroic spectacles, through these, the Nguyen rulers expected to remind the subjects of their compliance with the political consciousness: elephants, symbol of Emperors of unparalleled strength, were winners of all time, whereas tigers, the jungle beasts or rebels against the Court, were inevitably

Eating in Hoi An is cheap and easy

Snippets: The Delectable Sandwich, Singapore-Style

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The History of Sandwich Little did John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792) know he was making history when he placed some cuts of cold beef between slices of toast because he didn’t want to get up from the chair he had been sitting in for 24 hours.  In the Singapore experience, the use of bread as a convenient package for whatever ingredients you desire has become a delectable platform to showcase a unique culture. Sandwiches are tasty, nutritious, easy to make and quick to consume.  The modest sandwich can be as dressed up or as dressed down as you desire without sacrificing any of the convenience. They come in all shapes and sizes.  There’s the panini, which is a pressed, toasted, Italian-style sandwich.  The club sandwich, dating back as far 1899, is served on toasted bread, stacked in three layers and cut into quarters with mayo, lettuce, tomato and bacon (at a minimum).  The flatbread version a sandwich is called a ‘wrap’, which has been in existence since before the 1900s.  The dominant taste of any sandwich is the filling, and the sandwich can either be hot or cold.  Hamburgers, falafel, open sandwiches, and even ice-cream sandwiches round out the field [...]

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place  You know you’re in for a treat when soft lighting and jazzy tunes embrace your entrance. Strolling into the relaxed ambience was truly Anti:dote for our overworked souls this evening. The Food One of the first thing we did was gush over the crockery. Executive Chef Tryson is a pottery hobbyist, and the plating throughout our entire meal was just delightful. Of course any good meal comes with drinks, and with little ado, we jumped straight into the Rabbit Hole (S$23) with a gin base and touches of pineapple as the perfect cheers to new beginnings. The baby carrot gave such a refreshing crunch to the drink, and balance to the citrus flavours. Paired with this drink was the Chicken Liver Parfait, Arugula Nest, Quail Egg (S$16) which came in a bird-shaped sharing portion, of course. Mixing these together, then heaped onto the thin crispy bread slice. The strong flavours of the parfait, the creaminess of the quail egg, the crunch of the arugula, and the bite of the thin bread…Can anyone spell bliss because I think this is it. Speaking of bliss, may your new year be prosperous and full of delicious moments! Head Bartender Bannie Kang [...]

Food Review: Xiao Ya Tou at Duxton Hill | Familiar Singapore and Asian Flavours with a Twist

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place Located at Duxton Hill, Xiao Ya Tou has been opened for more than a year and I am surprised it took me this long to have finally checked it out. The space an dinterior reminds me of old Singapore, with a strong retro vibe, including a cosy space towards the end beside the kitchen where there is a nice dosage of natural light from the glass ceiling. The Food The one page menu showcases many familiar local dishes with modern touches such as the XYT Hokkien Mee, Char Kway Teow and XYT Li Rou Fan. I started with the Crispy Otak-Otak Rolls (S$12) with tangy tamarind peanut sauce. It sounds like a normal otak dish but this starter proves to be an additive and delicious one. The otak is cleverly concealed in the crispy and thin roll, with the flavours complemented well by the slightly spicy sauce. This is a must order for me. I don’t pay S$16 for a plate of Hokkien Mee easily, but curiosity got the better of me and decided to give this a try. The XYT Hokkien Mee (S$16) here is full of ‘wok hei’ and is a good size to share for 2 [...]

Food Review: The Lobby Lounge at Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore | 7 Legendary Hawker Dishes for a Delicious Semi-Buffet Lunch

by theRantingPanda @ The Ranting Panda

The Place The idea of having local Singaporean delights at a five star hotel in Singapore may sound gimmicky and pricey, and here is the constant challenge – how do you guarantee that the local dishes stay true to its authenticity and flavours? The answer it seems, is to collaborate directly with renowned hawker stalls in Singapore and bring them into your hotel. I have been curious about The Lobby Lounge at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore since it introduced its local theme semi-buffet lunch late last year, and I finally managed to check it out recently. Having been to the other restaurants within the hotel such as Nami and Origin Grill, the most striking change in the past one year other than the new F&B concept is the major revamp of its lobby. The new lobby lounge area looks more much inviting than before, complete with lush greenery indoors and white marble finishing which breathes a new lease of life to the property.
