Berlin for free – part I

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

It is a fact: Berlin is still one of the top budget destinations in Europe. The German capital has a lot to offer with its touching history, diverse neighborhoods, affordable food and accommodation options. Not to mention the infinite nightlife choices. Although prices have consistently risen in the last years (especially for the locals), Berlin has a plethora of activities and attractions that are totally free of charge! So it was only natural that we dedicated some time to give you tips for enjoying Berlin for free!  In fact, there are so many free-of-charge activities that we decided to publish this article in two parts! Make sure to read them both before deciding where to spend your time! Find “Berlin for free – part II” here! Most of the places are more enjoyable in the warmer seasons, when people spend their spare time in the parks and lakes all over the city and take advantage of the late sunsets. However, in the colder months, Berlin offers plenty of nice indoor activities as well. The first and most basic thing you will need is to maintain high levels of nutrients in your body (also known as getting food). And in Berlin you [...]

Best German Food (savory) and the Berliner restaurants to try them. On this article about traditional German Food and restaurants in Berlin, we will cover some of the most iconic “German/Austrian dishes” and the best restaurants to get them. Mind you, “German food” has evolved and changed over time. Berlin’s multi-cultural makeup ads a complete new twist to it. In this article we will only focus on what is regarded as “old school” and traditional Germanic food items. We also wrote an article about typical Berliner foods, in case you are interested. Let’s start by explaining what the dishes are. Below each dish you will find at least one suggestion of a good restaurant to get them. We hope you enjoy them and as always, please feel free to write us with your favorites. We promise to try them!   Schnitzel – The most famous version (and our favorite) is the Wiener Schnitzel Wiener Schnitzel is a dish consisting of a thin slice of veal (or sometimes pork) that is breaded, fried, and garnished. Berlin’s Landmarks and their nicknames – Part I

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

The German language is known for giving precise names to things. Often, this means having to read through very long words, composed by several names attached to each other that create an unique word, with a single meaning. For the most part, the names don’t sound so appealing and are particularly complex for non-German speakers to understand. Forget about properly pronouncing them! LOL. To make Berlin’s landmarks’ names more attractive, Berliners give them affectionate nicknames, the “Spitznamen”. They are usually nicknames that give a short substitute for their real and unpronounceable names, often highlighting specific aspects of the “object”. By the way, giving nicknames is one of the characteristics of the infamous “Berliner Schnauze” (Berliner snout) or Berlinerisch, the colloquial standard German spoken in Berlin and in the surrounding Brandenburg state. This local “dialect” is considered, in other parts of Germany, to be gruff and full of rough humor. Note: The sight nicknames are often mentioned in travel guides. However, in the everyday life, locals don’t often use them, unless they want to be ironic or to impress tourists with some Berliner “sense of humor”. The exceptions are the “Bierpinsel” in Steglitz, since nobody uses its real name (Turmrestaurant an [...]

Lava, Delicatessen in Neukölln

The storefront that precedes Lavanderia Vecchia is now home to Lava. A deli with mossy green walls and checkered tiles on the floor. A lone ham and 4 long salamis greet me when I come in. Berlin’s Best Christmas Markets – 2017

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

BERLIN BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS GUIDE 2017 is out! From the last weekend in November until right after Christmas the city is “inundated” with some of the most magical and enchanting Christmas markets. In fact, there are more than 60 of those throughout the city. Locals gather together to celebrate and get cozy while drinking mulled wine, beer and eating some of the most yummy German street food. Another favorite activity at Christmas Markets is, of course, shopping for hand made Christmas decorations and trinkets. Several vocal and musical groups provide for a fun entertainment program. Not all Christmas markets are alike, so it is totally worth exploring a few during the season. Some of them are more exclusive and posh. Others are very popular and feel almost like Carnival fairs. Some are located in stunning landmarks like Charlottenburg Palace, Gendarmentmarkt Square or in little old neighborhood/village centers. Others take place on city’s open spaces, old factories and squares. The past couple of years has seen a surge of “specialty” Christmas markets and they range from Greek, Japanese, Vegan, you name it. These, even if fun,  tend to feel less “Christmassy” as the traditional ones, so we decided this year to focus on the ones [...]

Ordering (and actually receiving) your packages in Berlin

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – for some. For others, the Christmas season can be a real headache, particularly when living away from your home country. Receiving packages from loved ones is of course a nice treat, and ordering the things you like online from familiar shops you know and love can cure any homesickness for a short while. But, living as an expat in a city like Berlin, you’re likely to be receiving more items on average than the locals do, and that means waiting for multiple deliveries around this time of year. We thought it might be a good idea to give you a heads up about situations that often come up so you can plan in advance and avoid the hassle. In fact, we were super happy when our friends at Paypal invited us to collaborate this winter by giving you some understanding of the challenges of shopping online and actually receiving your packages in Berlin. Plus there is a cool tip in the end of this article…if you decide, after all, to return your packages. Experiences can include: racing to the intercom to answer the buzzer in a VERY quick fashion before the [...]

AWESOME BERLIN

Now that we have given you quite a few tips on how to enjoy Berlin for free – Part I, we are delighted to share our second article on how to enjoy Berlin on a shoestring budget. Let’s start this article with tips for animal lovers! If hanging out with animals is your thing, you will be delighted to explore the urban farms spread all over Berlin. They can also be a Zoo alternative for the kids. Our favorite is open daily and it is called Domäne Dahlem. It houses an agricultural open-air museum, where you can get in touch with a rural way of life and forget that you are in the middle of the city! At the Hasenheide Park, there is an enclosed area for goats, sheep and turkeys, with some exotic animals, like llamas and camels. In the south of Berlin, the Gemeindepark Lankwitz has also an enclosed area with deer! And slightly out of town, the Tierhof Alt-Marzahn takes you back to the rural life of the early 20th century, with its lovely windmill and village vibes! Domäane Dahlem. Wikimedia Commons. Neighborhood Guides – Berlin City West

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

City West is booming again. The surroundings of Tauentzienstrasse – and its extension Kurfürstendamm – are having a 3rd rebirth. The area started developing in the Wilhelmine era, when it was not yet part of Berlin, after the construction of the train station at the Zoological Garden, which helped Berlin expand its boundaries to the west. It was conceived as a commercial and entertainment center of the German Empire’s capital, in addition to the historical centre in Mitte. It was led by the Kurfürstendamm transformation into a boulevard and the opening of the now centenarians department store KaDeWe and the Theater des Westens, two of the most emblematic constructions of that time. Foto:KSP Jürgen Engel Architektenhttps://www.berliner-zeitung.de/1546538 During the Weimar Republic, the area was incorporated to Berlin and was synonymous of the decadent luxury of the Golden Twenties. After the bombardments during the Second World War, the center of West Berlin lived its second  life and it was considered as a window of the progress and the “economic miracle” of West Germany in the 1960s. From 1961 to 1989, when the city was divided by the Wall, the area was developed to be the counterpart to the old town center in [...]

10 Exciting and Innovative Berlin Restaurants

10 Exciting and Innovative Berlin Restaurants

Europe Up Close

Unlike France and the relatively proximate nations of the Mediterranean, Germany is not traditionally known for its cutting-edge cuisine. Meat in tube form, pork knuckle and vast quantities of bier remain some of the more enduring gastronomic icons that the Germans have spared upon the world (not necessarily a bad thing either). However, in 2015, all that is changing – particularly exciting things are happening in the German food scene, and Berlin is leading the way with these 10 innovative Berlin restaurants. There are even some really great vegan restaurants in Berlin now! Paris, Madrid and the Amalfi Coast may know

New! Bite Club, Street Food Party on the Spree

by Suzy @ Foodie in Berlin

Read ‘New! Bite Club, Street Food Party on the Spree’ on the Foodie in Berlin website.

The upcoming Bite Club Berlin has prompted me to do something I’ve yet to do on Foodie in Berlin – write about something I haven’t been to yet.  But I have a feeling… “The way you know about a good melon.” It’s logical really, think what a success Street Food Thursdays at Markthalle Neun has...

Ruman in Amman, Jordan

by Suzy @ Foodie in Berlin

Read ‘Ruman in Amman, Jordan’ on the Foodie in Berlin website.

I missed the memo that it was Ramadan, (or I ignored it more likely). So for the past month we’ve been firmly planted at my father’s home in Ruman, Jordan (Ruman means pomegranate in Arabic, lovely, isn’t it?).  The kids and I have been living on our pomegranate hill, which is planted not with pomegranates...

Berliner Fotospots – Einige Tipps

Absolutes Must have ist natürlich der Berliner Fernsehturm.

Berlin Tempelhof Airport – Impressive and Deactivated

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

If you’ve lived in Berlin long enough, you’ve no doubt been to Tempelhofer Feld – a sprawling public park that’s especially popular in the summer and a ‘must-see’ spot in the city.  But what about that huge building on the horizon? This striking display of architecture is a symbol of Berlin’s eventful history, otherwise known as Flughafen Berlin-Tempelhof (or Berlin Tempelhof Airport) and the field is actually the old runway and a part of the main terminal building. Its distinctive Neoclassical, Nazi architecture style is very imposing and makes for some monumental viewing. It no longer functions as a working airport and is now a protected monument, however parts of the building are open to the public through guided tours, and so we spent two hours on one of them to get a look behind the scenes and hear for ourselves just how this historical landmark came to be – the time flew by (ahem). Our guide was very knowledgeable (as you’d expect from a tour guide!) but also explained things interestingly and enthusiastically, answering questions as we went and allowing for all the picture taking. Tempelhof officially became an airport on 8 October 1923 and the old terminal was [...]

Tomato Chickpea Salad with Celery

Read ‘Tomato Chickpea Salad with Celery’ on the Foodie in Berlin website.

I’ve gotten into a good habit of late. After I drop Layla off at school, I come home and make lunch or however much of lunch can be made ahead of time. A recent favourite is Camargue rice with black beans loosely based on this Bon Appetit recipe. Another is a mung bean noodle salad...

My favorite Restaurants in Berlin right now

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

First, a disclaimer: This is a list of my favorite restaurants in Berlin right now. I am sure there are a million other great restaurants that are worth a visit. My goal with this article is to give you a shortlist of where I like to eat these days. These restaurants have proven to deliver delicious food and satisfying experience, CONSISTENTLY. Yes, chefs and staff may have bad days, but I guarantee that these places have way more amazing days than otherwise. You may be disappointed, as I am not going to tell you about the *newest* restaurants in Berlin. Most of the places I am recommending have been around for a while. I catch myself going back and that, I think, is a good sign. I want to personally give you solid options that I truly love and are here to stay (I certainly hope so).  Take it as a recommendation between friends. I have also mostly selected restaurants that are not going to break your bank. They range from my trusted Turkish joint, where you can eat for 10 bucks to my favorite mid-range restaurants, where you can get an amazing dinner for around 60-70 Euros. If you [...]

Lady’s Guide to the Perfect Sunday in London

by A Lady in London @ A Lady in London

It’s a quiet morning at London’s Columbia Road Flower Market. The traders have finished setting up their stalls and the blossoms are warming in the morning sun.
