by Daniel Noll @ Uncornered Market

When readers ask, “I’m traveling to Karakol. Is there anything to do there? Where should I go?” We have a raft of ideas, often surprising them. Why? Ordering (and actually receiving) your packages in Berlin

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – for some. For others, the Christmas season can be a real headache, particularly when living away from your home country. Receiving packages from loved ones is of course a nice treat, and ordering the things you like online from familiar shops you know and love can cure any homesickness for a short while. But, living as an expat in a city like Berlin, you’re likely to be receiving more items on average than the locals do, and that means waiting for multiple deliveries around this time of year. We thought it might be a good idea to give you a heads up about situations that often come up so you can plan in advance and avoid the hassle. In fact, we were super happy when our friends at Paypal invited us to collaborate this winter by giving you some understanding of the challenges of shopping online and actually receiving your packages in Berlin. Plus there is a cool tip in the end of this article…if you decide, after all, to return your packages. Experiences can include: racing to the intercom to answer the buzzer in a VERY quick fashion before the [...]

Berlin’s Landmarks and their nicknames – Part I

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

The German language is known for giving precise names to things. Often, this means having to read through very long words, composed by several names attached to each other that create an unique word, with a single meaning. For the most part, the names don’t sound so appealing and are particularly complex for non-German speakers to understand. Forget about properly pronouncing them! LOL. To make Berlin’s landmarks’ names more attractive, Berliners give them affectionate nicknames, the “Spitznamen”. They are usually nicknames that give a short substitute for their real and unpronounceable names, often highlighting specific aspects of the “object”. By the way, giving nicknames is one of the characteristics of the infamous “Berliner Schnauze” (Berliner snout) or Berlinerisch, the colloquial standard German spoken in Berlin and in the surrounding Brandenburg state. This local “dialect” is considered, in other parts of Germany, to be gruff and full of rough humor. Note: The sight nicknames are often mentioned in travel guides. However, in the everyday life, locals don’t often use them, unless they want to be ironic or to impress tourists with some Berliner “sense of humor”. The exceptions are the “Bierpinsel” in Steglitz, since nobody uses its real name (Turmrestaurant an [...]

Neighborhood Guides – Berlin City West

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

City West is booming again. The surroundings of Tauentzienstrasse – and its extension Kurfürstendamm – are having a 3rd rebirth. The area started developing in the Wilhelmine era, when it was not yet part of Berlin, after the construction of the train station at the Zoological Garden, which helped Berlin expand its boundaries to the west. It was conceived as a commercial and entertainment center of the German Empire’s capital, in addition to the historical centre in Mitte. It was led by the Kurfürstendamm transformation into a boulevard and the opening of the now centenarians department store KaDeWe and the Theater des Westens, two of the most emblematic constructions of that time. Foto:KSP Jürgen Engel Architektenhttps://www.berliner-zeitung.de/1546538 During the Weimar Republic, the area was incorporated to Berlin and was synonymous of the decadent luxury of the Golden Twenties. After the bombardments during the Second World War, the center of West Berlin lived its second  life and it was considered as a window of the progress and the “economic miracle” of West Germany in the 1960s. From 1961 to 1989, when the city was divided by the Wall, the area was developed to be the counterpart to the old town center in [...]

Seriously: Ten New Food Spots We Should Try This Winter | Stil in Berlin

by @ Stil in Berlin

This winter, I took a little break from cold and grey season and travelled from Berlin all the way south to Lisbon (and back), and I only returned this past weekend to a city that definitely has spring in the air, and I'm so glad. I settled in with a classic Kreuzkölln triple: breakfast and coffee at , then I picked up a loaf at , and finished this round-trip off with a chai bagel at . And while these favourites definitely made me excited to be back, I instantly wanted to work on finding new places to try out. Winter is a bit of a slow season for openings, but not entirely dire: we got some new places for Japanese soup, for fried food, and for sweets. Basically what we need to keep going through the last weeks of winter? Of course, there's been loads more openings, but as usual this is my personal top-interest list, sorted alphabetically. If you've visited one of these, please let me know what you thought about them in the comments! And if you think I missed a great new spot, let me know asap! In case these are not enough new places, have you checked off ?

It must be at least ten years ago that I saw  perform for the first time – it was one of these glorious Berlin summer days full of sunshine and happy people on the rooftop of the former office of then tiny Soundcloud. He delivered a set that underlined the amazingness of the day, playful and light, yet still intense on the bass, his singing, and completely danceable. The mood and sound of the day is still so present in my memory. When he sent me an email a couple weeks ago whether I wanted to premier the new video set in Brandenburg I was like: Sweet! Let's do it!

Banh Xeo (Sizzling Saigon Crepes) – Best street food in Saigon

by admin @ Saigon-online.net

Banh Xeo are giant savory pancakes that literally translate to sizzling cake because of the noise they make when they are being cooked. A good sizzling cake is a crispy crepe bulging with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts, plus the garnish of fresh herbs that are characteristic of most authentic Vietnamese dishes. What is Banh Xeo? Banh xeo is […]

Curry, Pho, Bao, and Thai Food Rule Berlin — Here’s Why

Curry, Pho, Bao, and Thai Food Rule Berlin — Here’s Why

Vacay Network

If there’s a silver lining in any misery, Berlin’s street food is a gleaming example. One of the city’s blessings since the end of the Second World War is the flavors that arrived from afar and steadfastly seeped into its culture. Decimated from bombings and warfare and then ripped into two by politics, the city found itself seeking a foundation. It turned to other nations to assist. Workers came from Turkey, divided Vietnam, Thailand, and elsewhere. Seventy years later, Berlin’s food scene is an authentic mix of ethnic cuisines that might surprise visitors who think all of Germany is predominantly Bavarian in flavor. During her exceptional food tours, Samantha Reidie leads guests to some of the places where you can taste 21st-century Berlin. Bite Berlin’s Samantha Reidie carries currywurst from Curry 61 to her clients. Currywurst is the most popular food in the city. (Adrian Brijbassi photo for VacayNetwork.com)These bites will include a stop at District Mot, a Vietnamese eatery that has won a best burger competition in the city for five years in a row. That “burger” is a wheat rice bao bun stuffed with a beef patty that’s topped with a savory caramelized fish sauce. It is served with pickled vegetables, coriander, and soy bean skin. The burger, which costs 6 euros (about $7.20 USD), is part of the restaurant’s menu focused on “Saigon Street Food” and is emblematic of the impact immigrants have made on Berlin’s food scene.“The Vietnamese came to both the west and east side of Berlin, so you will find incredible pho restaurants throughout the city,” notes Reidie, whose tour company is called Bite Berlin. District Mot is one of Berlin’s many Vietnamese restaurants, which began to spread through the city in the 1960s. The colorful eatery serves “the best burger in Berlin.” (Adrian Brijbassi photo for VacayNetwork.com)And she’s right. One of the first curiosities of Berlin you will notice is the proliferation of Asian restaurants. The North Vietnamese moved to the former East Berlin because of their government’s association with the Soviet Union, while the South Vietnamese arrived in the west. On either side of the Berlin Wall, both groups worked alongside other immigrants to help Germans rebuild the city. Their culinary influence suits Berlin, which has some of the best inexpensive food choices in Europe. The destination that should be at the top of any foodie’s list of places to nosh is Thai Park, which is the local nickname for Preussen Park in the city’s west side. On weekends, Thai Park fills with tents and home cooks toiling beneath them. Think of an Asian night market that takes place during the day and with patrons who are primarily European and you might imagine both the atmosphere and the quirky charm of the spot. Want Real Asian Taste? Head to BerlinFor about 10 euros ($13 USD) you can enjoy a plate of Pad Thai prepared in a skillet before your eyes, and gyoza made from generations-old recipes, and fried coconut prawns, and a half-litre bottle of German pilsener. Better value you’ll never find. District Mot’s bao burger is loaded with flavors from the Far East. (Adrian Brijbassi photo for VacayNetwork.com)Thai Park is like much of Berlin. It’s unadorned, unsophisticated, unpretentious. It’s a land of WYSIWYG, and that’s utterly okay. If you do want fancy, you can head to Kaufhaus des Westens, the largest department store in continental Europe. Its sixth floor is full of gourmet food stations, including restaurants where you can find German favorites like Wiener schnitzel, cabbage rolls, and savory strudels. KaDeWe, as the mall is nicknamed, is celebrating its 110th year in 2017. It is worth a visit if only for the history. During the Cold War, KaDeWe was a symbol of West Germany’s prosperity, one of the places where the residents of the east coveted to go. Dumplings abound in Thai Park, where they are fried for you as you wait — with your mouth watering, no doubt. (Adrian Brijbassi photo for VacayNetwork.com)But it is on the streets where you’ll get to know Berlin’s contemporary tastes and culture. The journey will include currywurst, which arrived in the world by serendipity. A woman in East Berlin bartered with British military officers stationed at checkpoints along the Berlin Wall, giving them alcohol in exchange for any food better than the rations doled out to East Germans. The British provided her with ketchup and curry powder. Not knowing what to do with the ingredients that were foreign to her, she combined them in a pot and poured them over two items with which she was familiar — sausage and bread. Years later, currywurst — slices of sausage smothered with ketchup and curry sauce, and served with bread or French fries — is the most popular food in Berlin. More than 17 million orders of it are consumed in a year. There are street food stalls serving it outside most train stations and at major corners in neighborhoods throughout the city. Berliners gather each weekend at Thai Park, which is filled with home cooks making authentic Asian food beneath tents and umbrellas. (Adrian Brijbassi photo for VacayNetwork.com)While North Americans can find artisanal versions of currywurst in restaurants like WVRST in Toronto or Bestie in Vancouver, the Berlin kind is — as you might suspect — not fancy or ambitious. It aims to give you sustenance with flavor, not a gourmet experience. Just like the city’s other street-food invention: the Doner (or Donair). The kebab filled with lettuce, onions, and tomatoes, and covered in a thick cream sauce was invented in the 1960s by a Turkish construction worker in West Berlin. Today, there are more than 1,000 doner shops in the city. Doner is wrapped in flat bread. And that’s the other delight in Berlin. Pad thai, anyone? You’ll have a difficult time finding any better than this dish in Berlin’s Thai Park. (Adrian Brijbassi photo for VacayNetwork.com)Germany has more than 3,000 varieties of bread. Meals in the country are named after bread, as Reidie points out. Breads, of course, can also mean pastries. One of Berlin’s great exports is the cinnamon bun, called the cinnamon snail in Deutschland. At Zeit für Brot, you’ll find delicious versions that are flavorful and not sugary sweet. How do you wash all of this down? Beer is the first option for many, but Germany also has outstanding white wines, and Reidie, who has an affinity for history as well as food, singles out one of the few surviving brands from East Berlin. The Champagne-style Rotkäppchen sparkling wine (whose name means “Little Red Riding Hood”) is much beloved in the city. In East Berlin, it was the only wine available to most people and remained popular after reunification in 1990. In 2002, the former East Berlin company that manufactured it famously bought out its counterpart in the west. Rotkäppchen, like so many other tastes you’ll discover in Berlin, has a story behind it and somehow that background makes it all the more satisfying to savor.MORE ABOUT VISITING BERLINPretzels remain one of Germany’s staple foods. Visitors will have plenty of chances to enjoy them while in Berlin. (Adrian Brijbassi photo for VacayNetwork.com)Getting Around: Berlin has an immense public transit system that covers seemingly every corner of the city. Buses and trains that run both above ground (S-Bahn) and below ground (U-Bahn) are frequent and efficient. The fares are multi-tiered, depending on how far you travel and for how long. As there are no turnstiles and few transit officers checking tickets, the city’s trains are operated largely on an honor system. Visit the public transit website for details on planning your trip.Where to Stay: The Sir Savigny Hotel is a delight. It is one of those trendy tech-savvy European hotels that takes a relaxed approach to guest relations. You are welcomed by a staff member who is free to roam around with a laptop so he or she can sit with you at a free space in the lounge to coordinate your check-in. Have a glass of water or order a drink through the process. Rooms are immaculate with an antique theme for its decor, and large, comfortable beds. Contemporary music plays in the lobby, elevator, and hallways (until about 9 p.m.). The on-site Butcher restaurant serves outstanding burgers and a fantastic breakfast featuring a buffet of breads, pastries, fruit, and cereals, and other options from the restaurant menu. Room Rates: Nightly weekend stays start at about 110 euro (about $133 USD), depending on the season. What to Do: The highly recommended Bite Berlin tour costs 40 euro ($47.80 USD) per person and lasts about three hours, with five food tastings and a glass of sparkling wine to finish. It starts at Hackescher Market in the city’s east end. Thai Park (see map below) runs from noon til about 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays when the weather is pleasant. Show up with blankets or folding chairs and prepare to enjoy the afternoon picnicking on the grass while enjoying vast amounts of Asian food made by home cooks.

Bánh Mí – unser Baguette mit Kolonialgeschichte.

Jetzt kommt unser Lieblingssandwich #sandwichlove

You may be disappointed, as I am not going to tell you about the *newest* restaurants in Berlin. Most of the places I am recommending have been around for a while. I catch myself going back and that, I think, is a good sign. I want to personally give you solid options that I truly love and are here to stay (I certainly hope so).  Take it as a recommendation between friends. I have also mostly selected restaurants that are not going to break your bank. They range from my trusted Turkish joint, where you can eat for 10 bucks to my favorite mid-range restaurants, where you can get an amazing dinner for around 60-70 Euros. If you [...]

Up in the Air, Down to Earth: Our 2016 Travel Year in Review

by Audrey Scott @ Uncornered Market

When 2016 first began, I imagined it to be a relatively quiet year for us, at least in terms of travel. However, in these final flickers and embers, I peer back in reflection over our Instagram feed and photo stream and am struck by breadth and depth in turns that we've known over these last […]

Japanese Food in Tokyo – Motsuyaki, Yakitori and Yakiniku are What You Need to Eat

A New Year’s Review – Lifestyle and Goals

We saw a quite impressive amount of hail going down this week, which might have been exactly what meant when he told me that Berlin's gonna pay for all those very beautiful but very early spring days we enjoyed this March. Anyhow, April is upon us and until now there's no weather app telling us glory is vanishing (19 degrees tmrw, again!). Before you go out and frolic, here are the best links of the week:

Berliner Fotospots – Einige Tipps

Absolutes Must have ist natürlich der Berliner Fernsehturm.

Berlinale 2018: How to get tickets (& what to see) | Stil in Berlin

by @ Stil in Berlin

I’ll be honest and admit that, to me, Glühwein and snow are way overrated. Winter as a whole I could do without, tbh. But there’s one reason I don’t skip Berlin for all of its winter months and that’s Berlinale. For ten glorious days, at any time of day, we have our pick of dozens of different films. Most are from corners of the world I’ve not yet explored (Burma! Paraguay! the Democratic Republic of the Congo!), though there’s also Perspektive, an entire program of homegrown German titles (with English subtitles, of course, like all non-English films in the festival).

Berlin for free – part I

It is a fact: Berlin is still one of the top budget destinations in Europe. The German capital has a lot to offer with its touching history, diverse neighborhoods, affordable food and accommodation options. Not to mention the infinite nightlife choices. Although prices have consistently risen in the last years (especially for the locals), Berlin has a plethora of activities and attractions that are totally free of charge! So it was only natural that we dedicated some time to give you tips for enjoying Berlin for free!  In fact, there are so many free-of-charge activities that we decided to publish this article in two parts! Make sure to read them both before deciding where to spend your time! Find “Berlin for free – part II” here! Most of the places are more enjoyable in the warmer seasons, when people spend their spare time in the parks and lakes all over the city and take advantage of the late sunsets. However, in the colder months, Berlin offers plenty of nice indoor activities as well. The first and most basic thing you will need is to maintain high levels of nutrients in your body (also known as getting food). And in Berlin you [...]

Berlin’s Best Christmas Markets – 2017

by AwesomeBerlin @ AWESOME BERLIN

AWESOME BERLIN

BERLIN BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS GUIDE 2017 is out! From the last weekend in November until right after Christmas the city is “inundated” with some of the most magical and enchanting Christmas markets. In fact, there are more than 60 of those throughout the city. Locals gather together to celebrate and get cozy while drinking mulled wine, beer and eating some of the most yummy German street food. Another favorite activity at Christmas Markets is, of course, shopping for hand made Christmas decorations and trinkets. Several vocal and musical groups provide for a fun entertainment program. Not all Christmas markets are alike, so it is totally worth exploring a few during the season. Some of them are more exclusive and posh. Others are very popular and feel almost like Carnival fairs. Some are located in stunning landmarks like Charlottenburg Palace, Gendarmentmarkt Square or in little old neighborhood/village centers. Others take place on city’s open spaces, old factories and squares. The past couple of years has seen a surge of “specialty” Christmas markets and they range from Greek, Japanese, Vegan, you name it. These, even if fun,  tend to feel less “Christmassy” as the traditional ones, so we decided this year to focus on the ones [...]

Spring is here: Salt & Silver on twisted Gin & Tonics | Stil in Berlin

by @ Stil in Berlin

Gin and Tonic is rightfully one of the most popular drinks around: its concept is simple and straightforward, and can easily be upgraded by adding one or three ingredients. However, I think it should always be based on a high quality gin with distinct botanical notes. was launched in 1830, and is still produced after a fiercely guarded recipe. Its key botanicals are juniper, coriander, angelica root and liquorice, with a strong juniper note. In order to explore the possibilities of G&T, Jo and Cosy, the two creatives behind Hamburg's uber-popular food pop-up Salt & Silver, traveled country. Inspired by Charles Tanqueray's six years of developing the perfect London Dry Gin, they joined forces with local chefs and bartenders to reinvent the classic drink and pair it with locally inspired dishes. In Munich, beer liqueur and sweet mustard were used to make a real Bavarian version, in Hamburg, Paola Labansat added grapes and citrus thyme, which was served with ceviche, fish tacos, and basil ice cream. Read on to find out how Berlin did in this challenge and get some inspiration for your next G&T creation...

I’ve gotten into a good habit of late. After I drop Layla off at school, I come home and make lunch or however much of lunch can be made ahead of time. A recent favourite is Camargue rice with black beans loosely based on this Bon Appetit recipe. Another is a mung bean noodle salad...

New! Bite Club, Street Food Party on the Spree

The upcoming Bite Club Berlin has prompted me to do something I’ve yet to do on Foodie in Berlin – write about something I haven’t been to yet.  But I have a feeling… “The way you know about a good melon.” It’s logical really, think what a success Street Food Thursdays at Markthalle Neun has...

by Victoria Cheung @ Miss Tam Chiak

It is summer all year round in Singapore. But if you wake up early, you will realise that mornings tend to be chillier than in the day. The streets are quiet, and a stroll through the uncharacteristically tranquil Chinatown at 7am does wonders for the mind and soul. I tracked down a stall at Chinatown...

Read ‘Zsa Zsa & Loui, Sandwiches, Neukölln’ on the Foodie in Berlin website.

If you want to find Berlin’s young entrepreneurs, you need to turn your attention to Neukölln and Kreuzberg. Two areas where you will find them cutting their teeth. While I would argue that America’s soft power has taken some considerable hits over the last decade, its food culture is thriving abroad.  It crops up in the most unlikely places- like on Hannoversche Strasse.  A street that even a die-hard Mitte resident will struggle to locate.  There on the former site of BarCelona next to the...

Escape: Switzerland’s Jungfrau region | Stil in Berlin

by @ Stil in Berlin

Any longtime Berliner knows that winters are for two things: Netflix and fleeing the city. We all have our own escape routes, some heading to Thailand or Mauritius, others sticking a little closer and leaving for Lisbon or Crete. And then there is that special kind of person, the wintersports enthusiast. These men and women actually seek out the colder spots in Europe, pleased as punch to get up early, spend several sunny hours on the slopes, and then zip down for an ungodly combination of carbs, booze, and Volksmusik called . Wanting absolutely none of that, but seeing the appeal of some time spent amidst majestic snowy peaks, we took up an invitation from the Jungfrau region and headed to Switzerland to see if we could ski.

Anna Durkes in Kreuzberg makes gelato.  It’s smoother than your average Berlin kugel and creamier, its richness coats the mouth like butter. The shop isn’t your average eis laden. Berlin Tempelhof Airport – Impressive and Deactivated

AWESOME BERLIN

If you’ve lived in Berlin long enough, you’ve no doubt been to Tempelhofer Feld – a sprawling public park that’s especially popular in the summer and a ‘must-see’ spot in the city.  But what about that huge building on the horizon? This striking display of architecture is a symbol of Berlin’s eventful history, otherwise known as Flughafen Berlin-Tempelhof (or Berlin Tempelhof Airport) and the field is actually the old runway and a part of the main terminal building. Its distinctive Neoclassical, Nazi architecture style is very imposing and makes for some monumental viewing. It no longer functions as a working airport and is now a protected monument, however parts of the building are open to the public through guided tours, and so we spent two hours on one of them to get a look behind the scenes and hear for ourselves just how this historical landmark came to be – the time flew by (ahem). Our guide was very knowledgeable (as you’d expect from a tour guide!) but also explained things interestingly and enthusiastically, answering questions as we went and allowing for all the picture taking. Tempelhof officially became an airport on 8 October 1923 and the old terminal was [...]
